Devestated by Loss, Empress GM Looks to the Future

22 April 2009
That fateful Friday, March 20 fire was still fresh in the mind of Empress Casino Joliet, Illinois general manager Frank Quigley when I sat down to speak with him about what's going to happen at the property in the wake of the total destruction of the pavilion. "Once the firefighters saw that the pavilion fire was getting ahead of them, they took everybody and shifted them to the gaming side and started fighting the fire by pushing it away from the casino," Quigley said...read more

Why do casinos move machines?

20 April 2009
Hello John, I have been reading your columns for a long time, but still find it difficult to understand this RNG. But that is not what I am writing about. I wrote once about brand new machines being placed in a casino, and in the first few days, or a couple of weeks, these machines give very generous payouts all the time...read more

Can you be successful at craps without being a controlled shooter?

19 April 2009
Dear Frank: I have read your book Beat the Craps out of Casinos dozens of times. I must admit it has enlightened me on the beauty of the game of craps. Since reading your book I have been to Vegas three times (over nine months) and I have religiously followed the 5-Count...read more

Betting Advice

18 April 2009
Hi Stickman, I have read your articles and enjoyed them. I have a few questions about betting that I hoped you would answer. Which are better bets or does it depend on the SRR? Assume $10 table min. 5Xs odds. Example 1. $10 pass line with $20 odds when the 5 and 9 are points place 6 & 8 for $30 each and buy the 4 & 10 for $20 each...read more

Barring, dealer advice, speed count and more

17 April 2009
Here are a cornucopia of questions that I've received from blackjack players, and my responses. "What's the point of reading books and articles and watching videos on blackjack when the more skillful you become the higher the probability you'll get barred and thrown out the door?" Too many players are getting paranoid about getting thrown out of the casino or getting beaten up by casino thugs (as depicted in the Hollywood movie "21") if they become card counters...read more

Crapshooters flock to books that explain dice control

16 April 2009
In the past few years the controversy about whether a shooter can control the dice and produce advantageous numbers has increased. Authors and experts now offer lessons, seminars, DVDs and books on the subject. So far the house has not demanded shooters roll the dice in special cups rather than by hand, which tells you to some degree, they're not yet in fear of those who show this unique skill with consistency. Yet the public remains fascinated with the concept. Gamblers have known about ways to "slide" dice and "blanket roll" for many years...read more

Moola or markers?

16 April 2009
Money may be the root of all evil, but it is the root of all casino gambling, as well, including those who wish to challenge the one-armed bandits. The saying is simply "no pay; no play." But how do you pay? In the good old days, you just put your coins in and spun the reels; then put in more coins and spun the reels...read more

Versatile Actor/Comedian Brad Garrett's Poker Face

15 April 2009
When Brad Garrett brings his stand-up comedy routine to the stage, he brings his poker face along for the ride. Garrett is a tremendous fan of the game and has been since his early 20's. You may have seen him on TV in one of his many celebrity poker tournament appearances, but he has also been known to take a break from his professional routine by relaxing in a game at a casino near his home in California or even when he's on the road. For the last 20 years, Garrett has made it a point to get together with Ray Romano and some other buddies to play a home game once a month. Garrett's love affair with poker almost began when he was a teenager, but it took him a few years to warm up to the game. "My cousin, with whom I'm very close, had a home game when he was in high school," Garrett said...read more

Playing It Smart: Can you gain an edge in blackjack by counting only aces?

14 April 2009
An oddity of blackjack is that cards may be favorable in some situations and adverse in others. Card counters know that shoes rich at the high end help them while those with excess low ranks serve the house, so they raise or lower their bets accordingly. But, consider this...read more

Let's do a little Web surfing, and catch a wave to see what's going on at casinos and gambling-related sites. Empress Casino (www.empresscasino.com): Chicago area players might want to check in for progress reports on when the Empress in Joliet might reopen...read more
