Crazy gambling letters from nutty people #1

17 September 2009

Harrah's does a survey every year of the American gambler and the last one I read said there were about 54 million of us, about 30% of the adult population in other words, and that we represent something of a cross-section of American society, although somewhat richer and better educated. As such there are probably a decent number of "nuts" among the gambling cross section as there are in society as a whole. Mind you, I do not mean "nuts" in the mental illness sense (who are to be helped and pitied), just "nuts" in the, well, nutty sense.

I've corresponded with some of these "nuts" and here are some of their e-mails and letters to me, and my sane and understanding responses. All spelling is theirs but I have punctuated some of them slightly so they are less un-understandable.

Dear So-Called Frank Scoblatte:

So what makes you so smart that you think you are so smart? Nothing that is what it all is nothing at all. Why do you say that there are no trends in gambing when I see trends all the time in everything I do including my so-called normal things of existance like shopping and bowling and garding? The so-called editos of this magazine should spunk you on your bittox!

Alex

Dear Alex:

I've never tasted Latte but I hear it is delicious! I am smart enough to know I am not that smart but I do know one thing about randomness. Trends exist in the past but cannot be accurately predicted for gambling purposes when a casino has an edge on every bet you make. Ultimately, trend-finding is another name for "losing finding." By the way, what is it you are garding?
