Star Brooks Gaming Guru - Page 9On the Road from Reno5 April 2002
In the quest to reach that point where there is enough income to continue, I found that I had a need to be closer to Reno for a while... so last Tuesday, I packed up the motor home, and headed to a place just outside of Reno...in Verdi.... there is a super new RV park at the Gold Ranch Casino... right on the California/Nevada border off of Interstate-80... ... From the Road to Vegas22 March 2002
We started out for Vegas last Sunday.... only to have the motor home towed back to Minden after a hose left behind by a mechanic fell into all the fresh new belts.... twanging them like over-stretched rubber bands... so after spending a day back at the mechanic's garage....(where they ate the labor and parts and made it right) we found ourselves heading out again on Tuesday morning. ... Coming Back from the Dead26 February 2002
The Gaming Guides were almost the end of me.... so what was the first thing I did after escrow closed, and I had moved from my Tahoe home of 16 years? I promptly renewed everything to do with the Gaming Guides, bought a 22' motor home, bought a laptop, and a cell phone, and committed myself to continuing on, with one exception.... ... (read more)
Leaving Lake Tahoe?18 January 2002
Well, the saga of Star takes yet another twist... in the "beat the bank" race, it looks like the win goes to my side of the fence. After ten days on the housing market, the house, my home, my life for the past 16 years has sold. It sold in what I consider record time... the buyers apparently are two contractor-types... ... It's Pretty in Tahoe, As Usual28 December 2001
It's pretty in Tahoe, as usual.... and we have an unusually high snow pack for this time of year... which breaks down to: If you like snow... there is plenty of it, and more on the way. Seemingly every few days we get new storms. The casinos are running a little slower, specially during mid-week... ... (read more)
Snow Coming to Lake Tahoe30 November 2001
As I write this, the first significant snowfall is expected to arrive sometime tomorrow, Saturday, November 24... a little later than hoped for by area ski resorts. Normally slated to open Thanksgiving.... this year the opening was delayed by rain.... lots and lots of rain fell Thursday, with chain controls going up and coming down all day. ... (read more)
Lake Tahoe, a Colorful Place to Visit19 October 2001
Autumn is here. The Aspens' brilliant foliage leaves a blazing trail of color throughout the mountains. It is a wonderful fall this year, the weather has been relatively mild, and each day grows more colorful. People flock to the Lake at this time of year... cameras in tow... you see them off the sides of the roads everywhere.... ... (read more)
Hard Hits12 October 2001
Gaming was already suffering in August. The Nevada Gaming Control Board released the figures and my own area, Northern Nevada, was down 18% over the past year's figures. I still haven't figured out the best way to look at it... Let's see... if the house win is down, doesn't that translate to us winning more? Now, we have September 11 and the after-effects to worry about. ... (read more)
Reno and Tahoe Faring Better Than Las Vegas28 September 2001
Las Vegas has been reeling after the disasters of September 11.... but showed a slight rebound... and there are lots of deals being offered in Las Vegas. Reno and Tahoe fared even better, as gaming revenues soared, as did the occupancy rate, which scored 92%. It didn't hurt to be a more "drive-up" market than an airline-dependent market. ... One Nation, Indivisible21 September 2001
I, like most people I know, am still reeling with shock and horror in the aftermath of the morning of Tuesday, September 11th... the images burned into my mind, like the minds of all Americans, as we witnessed the day, and the moment, that our lives would forever be changed. The nation has held its breath, waiting to see what will unfold. ... (read more)
