Mr. Clean

14 September 2001
When I first moved to Lake Tahoe in 1985, I met a most memorable character... affectionately and rightfully named "Mr. Clean." Bob Hoskins, was at that time a security guard at Barney's Casino. He had appeared in many T.V. commercials as "Mr. Clean" and one only had to look at him to know that he was indeed the real Mr. ... (read more)

The Great Reno Balloon Race

7 September 2001
Every year, this event just gets bigger and better.... and I try my hardest to find reason to get down to Reno.... to see the skies full of magnificent hot air balloons in every shape and size. They lift off from Rancho San Rafael Park and always.... have what they call "The Dawn Patrol" where the balloons lift off before dawn and take turns lighting up as they ignite the burners.... ... Regis Comes to Tahoe

31 August 2001
New slots again!... the newest being the "Regis' Cash Club" machines going into Caesars Tahoe. The Regis' Cash Club machines are linked to various casinos within the state and the top progressive award, which will not be less than $1 million, will be paid in full upon verification of a valid win. ... New Slots in Tahoe

24 August 2001
Walking through the casinos in Tahoe, I noticed that tucked among some of the newer multi-line slots that have 15-25 pay lines, there were a couple of good 9-lines... and reports from Generation-X to the old say that they are fun and pay fairly well. One is "My Rich Uncle," which blesses the player with different bonuses that pay pretty well, even if you are betting only one coin per line. ... (read more)

What Price Entertainment?

17 August 2001
I’ve noticed a growing trend.... now instead of finding happy gamblers playing the newer slots, I am instead finding clumps of gamblers piled into the remaining "old" slots.... standing room only for the video pokers... and it is getting harder and harder to find an uncrowded group of video keno machines. ... Uniting The Gamblers

10 August 2001
If one more person tries to tell me that gamblers are the epitome of apathy, I think I am going to start spitting nails for a hobby.... and for stress release. Since I hear from so many gamblers full of frustrations, and full of marvelous stories, I don't buy it... not for one minute. Sure, there are many who tried to be heard in the past... ... The End of an Era in Gaming

3 August 2001
Tuesday, July 31, marked the end of an era in gambling history... the merger between Harrah's and Harveys became complete. It was a bittersweet day for many "Tahoans", as locals are referred to, when over 50 years of history came to a close. The two properties, always known for their rivalry and competition, both belong to Harrah's now... ... (read more)

Tahoe News No More

27 July 2001
I hate saying it. I hate admitting it, but Tahoe won't have a column anymore after this one. I tried, and I tried, and I tried again..... I put the progressive jackpots online daily for 447 days straight, then for 48 days I did it twice a week, until I caved to the demand and resumed the daily jackpots. ... (read more)

Summer Gambling Sizzles in Reno-Tahoe

20 July 2001
Summer at the lake is still cooler than anywhere else... not only the pristine blue waters of a humongous lake... but matching skies with puffy cotton ball clouds and cool breezes... the scent of pine trees... and fresh air... guaranteed to cleanse the pollution from any city-dweller's system. Gaming is ... (read more)

Rubbing It In about Tahoe

13 July 2001
It has been so cool lately, I had to find socks to wear on my traditionally bare for summer feet! The past week has been terrific... cool weather, occasional showers, clouds, a breeze... very little thunder and lightning... wow! It's been like that for so long, I think I forgot how to sweat! Gaming, however, is still as hot as it gets anywhere... ... (read more)
