A shuffle through the gaming mailbag17 February 2009 Catching up on my e-mail after Global Gaming Expo, the first of a two-part shuffle through the Gaming mailbag:
Q. On video slots with bonus rounds, how much of your return comes from the regular game and how much comes from the bonus rounds? It seems like I do OK as long as I get the bonuses pretty often, but on a dry spell on the bonuses, the reels can't keep me going.

Hi, John,
Thanks for giving us a lot of useful info in your columns.
I have a question about players' clubs that award free slot play to club members who qualify. Is the amount of free play awarded based solely on money spent (as I'd always thought) or are winnings taken into consideration, too? I had a couple of good winning months a while back, followed by a month when dental bills cut into my gaming budget and the very next month my free play was cut nearly in half.
Thanks again for your informative articles.
Ruth
Dear Ruth,
Thanks for the kind words about my columns.
Any casino can use any formula it wants at any time to award free play, but the formulas are usually based only on the amount of play you give...read moreIn craps, should I keep my 6 or 8 bet working on the come-out?15 February 2009
Frank:
I'm trying to analyze the advantage of keeping a 6 or 8 place bet ON on the come out. I seems to me that if I keep a $6 place bet ON with a $5 pass line bet, I'm getting 7 to 1 odds on a bet that is usually 7 to 6. (I lose $1 if the 7 rolls but win $7 if the 6 rolls.) It's true that this way I will win $1 less in 36 statistically perfect come out rolls, but the odds are so good it seems a good idea...read moreIs the Pass Line Bet the Best for Someone Who Can Control the Dice?14 February 2009 Conventional wisdom (along with the math to back it up) states that the Pass Line bet is among the best in the game of Craps. Buying the 4 or 10 for $25 and paying a $1 vig only on wins is slightly better (at 1.3%), but as the buy bet approaches $100, the house edge moves to 1.6%, which is worse than the 1.4% house edge on the Pass Line bet.
Many craps players do not know that the low house edge on the Pass Line bet comes from a two-to-one advantage on the come-out...read more![]() Getting Counterfeited in Omaha Hi/Lo Split13 February 2009 Omaha Hi/Lo 8-or-better is an action game. With nine cards to pick from, once the flop comes down nearly everybody has some kind of a hand – or at least a draw to a high or a low. A perplexing dilemma arises, however, when you're going low and have no realistic high hand possibilities...read moreStudy shows 5-Count does change the odds of winning!12 February 2009 Can any betting system change the odds of a random game? The answer is a resounding no. If the casino game is random, no betting system ever developed by man can make one a long-term winner. That is a brutal fact all casino players live with.
In 1989-1990 I wrote a book that brought to the public consciousness a man known as the Captain, an Atlantic City legend, who has won millions playing the game of craps since 1978...read moreBlue Chip Moves "All In" with 130-Million Expansion11 February 2009 Blue Chip Casino Hotel has given Chicago area gaming fans and Midwest residents seeking an adventurous getaway good reason to go that extra mile to Michigan City, Indiana by creating a $130-million expansion that has converted the property into a bona fide regional entertainment destination.
The centerpiece is the strikingly beautiful and upscale hotel tower, Spa Blu, which towers 22-stories above the Michigan City skyline and features 272 beautifully appointed rooms and 30 luxury suites.
On the second level of the tower and accessible from the hotel lobby is spa blu, a 10,000-square-foot spa with all the amenities associated with such a venue, including massages and facials, as well as hair, manicure, pedicure and makeup services.
There's also a fitness room and individual men's and women's lounges with steam rooms, experiential showers and whirlpools highlighted by water walls, and topped off by infused beverages, fruit, snacks and soothing music provided in the seating areas.

So it was when Boyd Gaming's Blue Chip Casino Hotel in Michigan City, Ind., previewed its new upscale Spa Blu hotel tower, two new restaurants and event center. A night before the Jan. 22 official opening, I found myself leaving my comfy room and heading downstairs to a party at the new restaurants It's Vegas Baby and The Game.
At It's Vegas Baby, I grabbed a few hot hors d'oeuvres and checked out the giant video screen behind the bandstand...read moreMore on slot machine progressives9 February 2009
Hi. I disagree of what you said. Most of the machines work according to what you've said. I.e., each outcome is random and independent.
But for some jackpots, operators/manufacturers could set it in such a way using the following way:
The jackpot'll be hit at most in x number of games...read moreIn craps, can you buy the 6 and the 8?8 February 2009
