Take Down the Eight on the Comeout?14 August 2009 I recently received the following letter from one of my readers.
I'm very interested in the effect on the house edge calculation for a placed 6 or 8 when one is left up on the comeout with a pass line bet. If, say, a $6 place bet on the 8 is left up with a $5 pass line bet, the total amount at risk is $1 and the payoff for a win is $7...read more![]() College football spread analysis; pot limit Omaha split book instructive13 August 2009 Andy Iskoe's newest football statistical study is packed with all kinds of statistical revelations, his latest focusing on colleges (147 pages, 8x11 plastic spiralbound, $29.95). This book, along with Dan Deppen's Pot Limit Omaha 8 Revealed (186 pages, paperbound, $29.95), should keep sports bettors and poker players busy during the waning days of summer.Iskoe's Pointspread Encyclopedia — Vol...read moreGood betting choices for advantage-play craps players13 August 2009 Many players in the dice control community attempt to formulate and then justify odd betting choices, thinking that they are prescribing excellent wagering schemes when, in fact, they advocate idiocy.
One such formulation is called the "see a horn, bet a horn" principle that advocates betting the horn with its 12.5% house edge should you see a streak of such horn numbers, those being 2, 3, 11, and 12...read moreGaming Industry Takes Responsible Playing Seriously12 August 2009 The vast majority of people who go to casinos participate in gaming as a form of recreation and entertainment.
For some, however, it is a vice that can ruin relationships and create financial hardship from which many cannot escape.
Even though the casino industry profits from the money that people lose playing games of chance, the majority of funding for the National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) is provided by commercial and Native American gaming companies and slot machine manufacturers.
Surprised?
Start up money for the organization was donated in 1996 with a 10-year pledge of $875,000 by Boyd Gaming Corporation, owner of Par-A-Dice Casino Hotel in East Peoria, Illinois, and Blue Chip Casino, Hotel & Spa in Michigan City, Indiana.
Harrah's Entertainment, Inc., which owns Harrah's Joliet Casino & Hotel and Horseshoe Casino Hammond, contributed $400,000 in 2008.
Last month the NCRG took a bold step forward in the study of gambling disorders by announcing the creation of the nation's first Centers of Excellence in Gambling Research at Yale University and the University of Minnesota...read moreThe math of match play11 August 2009 All casino games are math problems at heart, even if you can't see the arithmetic going on or use it to your advantage.
Slot machine industry professionals, including manufacturers and the casino slot directors who decide which games you see on casino floors, talk about games having the right math model...read moreAre the balls chosen on a Slotto machine random?10 August 2009
Love your columns.
My question is: When I'm playing Slotto and I get the bonus, are the popcorn balls (numbers) programmed to have a certain one drop or is it random?
Thanks, Colleen
Dear Colleen,
Thanks for the kind words about my columns.
The ball or balls that drop are chosen randomly by the ball tumbler in the machine...read moreBetting the don't9 August 2009
Dear Frank:
The don't has slightly better odds. The pass line is 1.414% HA (with no odds) while the don't pass is 1.414 PA — 2.778% (for the 12) for a HA of 1.364%. What I don't like about don't pass is that it is against the flavor of the table (everyone wants the point) and that you generally have to put out more money (for odds) to win less...read moreThe odds of winning Megabucks8 August 2009
Mr. Robison:
I have seen various estimates as to the odds of winning Megabucks. I e-mailed IGT asking what the odds were and they did not respond. I believe your estimate is around 1 in 50 million. Someone else used this thinking, "Assuming one number out of 256 (reels) were mapped to each jackpot symbol the odds of hitting the jackpot would be in 1 in 256^3 or 1 in 16,777,216.)" Why would this reasoning be flawed?
Is there a greater chance of winning the Megabucks progressive jackpot on the $1-$3 machines as opposed to the computerized penny machines? I was thinking that since the overall payouts on the penny machines would be greater, so the chance of hitting the progressive jackpot on those machines would be lower.
KS
Dear KS,
The reasoning is not flawed...read moreSometimes it pays to discard a winning hand in video poker7 August 2009 This is a true story that happened to my father-in-law, Pete. I've written about him before and his love of video poker. At age 90 he is, in fact, one tough player. Quarter Jacks or Better is his game, and he learned how to play correctly by practicing on video poker training software on my computer (he practices often)...read moreThe rightside versus the darkside6 August 2009 I know the math of craps, enough to know that there isn't much of a difference in betting the pass line or the don't pass line. The casino wins about 1.4%, give or take, against both types of bettors.
The darkside (don't) players get hammered on the very first placement of their don't pass or don't come bet when they lose on the 7 and 11 (eight ways to hit the deck) and only win on the 2 and 3 (three ways to come out ahead)...read more |
