More on the RNG

25 January 2010
John, Thanks for the info on the RNG. That helps out quite a bit but leaves me to question as to how random the results actually are. If the system uses the last calculated value and generates a number from it wouldn't the results follow some sort of sequence over time? I do realize that unless you're "Rain Man" you would never be able to memorize the sequence, nor would you able to stop the reels at exact intervals to follow the pattern...read more

25 January 2010
Harrah's Entertainment has long been commissioning biennial surveys profiling American gamblers. The American Gaming Association (AGA) has also been producing studies of this topic, using data from Harrah's as well as from polls sponsored on its own...read more

Craps world records

24 January 2010
Dear Frank: You should update the record holder in craps. I lived in Vegas for a year back in 2008. I have three rolls over an hour in my personal count, all of them at the Suncoast Casino. The first being the longest of about 1 hr and 40 mins...read more

Should I play quarter or dollar slots?

23 January 2010
I read your article where you answered the guy who wrote about his slot strategy. By the way, I love your column. Have taken your advice many times in playing slots. My question is: Is it better to play 3 credits on a quarter machine than to play one credit on a dollar machine? To me, it would be catastrophic to hit the big jackpot on a dollar machine and only be playing one credit...read more

Tales from the video poker trenches

22 January 2010
I was just about to hit the deal button on my video poker machine when my friend screamed to me, "What are you doing?" He was shocked that I was going to continue to play the same video poker machine that I had just hit a royal flush on. My friend is a novice slots and video poker player, and he was in Vegas for a weekend of some R&R...read more

Atlantic City makes the right choices? WRONG!

21 January 2010
It never ends. The complaints from long-time Atlantic City players just keep coming! They all basically fall into the same category, summed up in three words, one of which is a curse. Wouldn't you think in a bad economy that's hurting your bottom line the Atlantic City casinos would look to bring in some players by offering good deals? Wouldn't you think with the slot parlors in Pennsylvania killing your bottom line in slot revenue that you'd make your slots much, much looser than those in Pennsylvania and let the world know about it? Wouldn't you think the Atlantic City table games would become the best in the nation to lure East Coast gamblers who usually go to Vegas? I would think so too. But obviously the head executives who run the casinos think the opposite...read more

Video Poker Joins Community Gaming World

20 January 2010
Community gaming, a slot experience in which participants play at separate machines but share in the excitement and rewards of interactive bonus rounds, has a niche following among casino goers. Most of the major gaming manufacturers have come out with community games in recent years to appeal to casual players, couples and friends...read more

New Year's resolutions for gamblers

19 January 2010
The new year promises to be one of new games, new ways to play, new technology and, of course, some old problems. To a casino player, the most important of those problems is that sometimes the money just goes too fast. When it does, make sure you're in control, and not let your losing day spiral into bigger problems. As we enter into 2010, I offer these New Year's resolutions for gamblers: Resolve to stay within your bankroll: Decide before you play how much you're willing to spend on the day's entertainment...read more

An in-depth look at the RNG

18 January 2010
John, I have looked through most of your archives and cannot find a detailed explanation of how the RNG and lookup tables work in a slot machine. I have a good understanding of the process but a few things about the process I can't put together...read more

Craps baseball

17 January 2010
Mr. Scobe, I am senior from Rutgers University. I recently developed a game that combines and craps and baseball. It can be played and the rules may be read at my web site http://www.crapsbaseball.com/. I know it is a busy time of year for the industry, but I hope you can take some time out to check it out and get back at me. Thank you, Sean Dear Sean: Looked over your game and it seems like fun...read more
