What are the odds of being dealt a sequential royal?

9 November 2009
I recently was dealt a natural royal flush in sequential order. Can you tell me what the odds of that happening are? When we do video poker calculations, we usually deal with combinations, in which the order of the cards doesn't matter...read more

Vindicated by Dice Dominator

8 November 2009
Hello Mr. Scoblete: About a week ago I saw a documentary on the Golden Touch dice control technique of shooting craps ("The Dice Dominator") to which I felt vindicated. I have always felt that this could be done. I'm in no way saying I'm in your league but none the less I love the game. I just would like you to answer a question if you can...read more

Can slot players alter results?

7 November 2009
Is there anything a slot player can do that will alter his/her outcome once it has been determined by the random number generator? The likelihood being, "a nonpayment result, as a rule"? Is there any way to alter that (usual and consistent) result, and TURN THAT SPIN into a win? Robert Dear Robert, There's nothing players can do, legally, to alter the outcome. If they could figure out a way to move the reels or change the images on the screen to a winning combination, that wouldn't turn a loser into a winner because the result from the RNG is what matters, not what appears on the payline or the screen. So, they'd have to figure out some way to make it look like the RNG chose a winner...read more

My pet peeves

6 November 2009
When I was younger, nothing much bothered me when I played blackjack. But now that I'm a "senior," I'm getting grumpier (at least that's what my wife tells me), and that includes when I play blackjack. What about? Here's my list of pet peeves. Jumping-in in the middle of a shoe. This never bothered me; now it does but not for the reason that you think...read more

Record-keepers for basketball help bettors track winning, losing streaks

5 November 2009
Basketball bettors who are disciplined, who manage their money, keep careful records and anticipate when a team might be fresher or fatigued based on scheduling or travel, are likely to survive and flourish financially. Perfect Pairs Gives Blackjack a New Twist

4 November 2009
The last time I counted, there were 35 different variations of blackjack side bets that have been created by entrepreneurs and gaming companies through the years. Many of them enjoyed brief flings in casinos before disappearing, others are popular in select jurisdictions but never gained widespread appeal. Some, however, have stood the test of time, including Lucky Ladies, 21 + 3, Royal Match, and another option called Perfect Pairs. Every one of them is unique in its own way, but they all have one thing in common, and that is to provide a means for casino operators to extract extra revenue from blackjack tables. Perfect Pairs was recently introduced at Empress Joliet in Illinois, which along with its Penn National Gaming owned sister property, Hollywood Casino Aurora, are the only casinos in the Chicago area to offer the bet. The simplicity of the wager makes it an attractive proposition even for beginners...read more

One of those days at the casino

3 November 2009
My friend Jack had just had one of those days at the casino, and he phoned me to vent. "You know those days when nothing goes right? This wasn't quite one of those," he said. I asked if that meant he didn't lose his bankroll for the day. "No," he said, "but not for lack of trying...read more

Another lost money story

2 November 2009
A year or so ago my friend put a $100 bill into a cash machine in the casino. Thinking she had asked simply for a $100 ticket she grabbed the ticket when it popped out and hurried to grab the seat at her favorite machine because it was then empty...read more

Weak Three-Card Straight Flushes in 9/6 Jacks

1 November 2009
Let me begin by saying what I mean by a weak three-card straight flush. By this I mean any three-card straight flush that has one high card and is double inside or has no high cards and is single inside. A very weak three-card straight flush is one that is double inside and has no high cards...read more
