A Final Word on Cruise Ship Gambling

19 February 2002
I conclude my investigative series about the unregulated world of cruise ship gambling today with an analysis of what the International Council of Cruise Lines defines as "customer service", followed by a peak at what one cruise line operator calls a "player's club." CUSTOMER SERVICE What the guidelines say: The onboard casino operations will be the overall responsibility of the hotel manager or director, who is charged with ensuring the highest standard of conduct for casino staff...read more

The Illusion of Gambling

18 February 2002
The ancient Hindus called it "maya" and it meant illusion. To them the world, the flesh and the universe were just a figment in the mind of the Absolute and thus nothing was what it seemed to be. In fact, nothing was at all. Once you realized this you could free yourself from the cycle of birth, death and rebirth...read more

Getting Rich from Gambling?

17 February 2002
Gaming authors spend their time writing about how you can't get rich from gambling even though that was what got them interested in the first place. Be honest now. Who'd have bothered to look at gambling theory if you'd been told from the get-go you can spend six years studying advantage play and maybe make a reasonable monthly return on investment via the rigours of a random walk, provided you are reasonably well-financed though you'll be treated like a common criminal by the casinos and spend far too much time in hotels and have other players hate you because you took the dealer's bust card? No, what I wanted was big money...read more

The Taxman Cometh

16 February 2002
The old cliche that the only sure things in life are "death and taxes" might be wrong after all. With our ever-escalating medical knowledge, there is no telling how long we will live in the future, or whether we'll ever die at all. Artificial hearts, artificial lungs, stem cells, DNA recombinations and "who-knows-what-else" are pushing the envelope on life-expectancy to the point where there might not be any envelope after all...read more

Ask The Slot Expert

15 February 2002
I've been playing the progressive cyberstud poker on an internet casino. The person who gets a straight flush gets 10 per cent of the jackpot. I got the straight flush but only bet 2 and ante 4. The jackpot was $109,000.00. I only got $808...read more

Some Betting Systems Win and Lose

14 February 2002
A few months ago, I wrote that it's easy to design betting systems that win more often than they lose, but that designing systems that actually make money was another matter entirely. Last week, a reader phoned to challenge me...read more

Whether Betting Progressions Work Depends on how "Work" Works

13 February 2002
Strategies for varying bet size during a game are part of the gambling mystique. Not because, as some solid citizens believe, they're loopholes in the laws of chance. Rather, owing to the trade-offs they introduce between probabilities and amounts of wins and losses during sessions of reasonable duration...read more

Cruise Ship Gambling Guidelines

12 February 2002
My investigative series dealing with the unregulated world of casino gambling aboard cruise ships continues today with another look at the gambling guidelines enacted in 1999 by the International Council of Cruise Lines. The ICCL is a Washington, D.C.-based industry trade association that represents the interests of 17 passenger cruise lines and a variety of cruise industry suppliers...read more

Casino Marketing Strategy: Tell the Truth

11 February 2002
Truth is a wonderful thing. It can set you free; it is the best policy and its nature, unlike a lie's nature, is not to grow into something bigger than you can handle. Once you tell the truth, it is generally over; whereas if you lie, the whole thing is just beginning...read more
