Vegas Vacation: Glitz and Glamour or Good Games?

26 October 2004
A question for Las Vegas visitors: Do you regard a trip to casino gambling's capital city a glitzy vacation, where the highlight is the glamor of the Strip, or do you like to search out the best odds while looking for a better shot to win than you'll find in other parts of the country? A couple of months ago, I mentioned more than once that the best gambling deals in Las Vegas are found away from the Strip...read more

Ask Frank: How Long Before a Hot Roller?

25 October 2004
Dear Frank, I enjoy craps and I am very patient. To me craps is at best a game of long periods of losing a little (hopefully) interrupted by short periods of winning -- a lot (hopefully). My question is how long do you feel you have to play before the table has a hot roller, say, a 15-minute hot roller or a 30-minute hot roller? I'm not looking for a dissertation on probability theory, just your mindset when you walk up to the table as to how long you expect to ride out the cold periods. Thanks, Ted Dear Ted: The answer you want doesn't exist as something I can say definitively...read more

A Tale of Two Craps Crews

22 October 2004
With apologies to Charles Dickens, it was the best of crews; it was the worst of crews. On a recent trip to Las Vegas, the best of crews was found at Harrah's, during all shifts, and the worst of crews was found at Treasure Island during the day shift...read more

May Tribes Rake The Pot?

21 October 2004
What is the difference between "and" and "or?" If the answer is nothing, then tribal cardrooms have a legitimate advantage over privately owned cardclubs. If, in fact, the words "and" and "or" are not synonymous, then Gov. Gray Davis illegally let tribes take too much from every pot. On March 7, 2000, the voters of California approved Proposition 1A, amending the State Constitution to allow federally recognized tribes to offer some specified forms of gambling, including banking card games. Although this tribal monopoly on casino-style games is being challenged in court as violating federal statutes and the United State Constitution, there is no doubt that, at the moment, tribal casinos may offer games like house-banked blackjack, which privately owned cardclubs may not. Tribes may also spread poker, because tribes may offer any game permitted in the state. Cardclubs may spread poker because it is a non-banking or round game...read more
