How Much Luck Is Involved in Gambling, Really?

27 February 2005
There's a poker player I know who usually kills 'em dead at the tables. He never calls on the end with a losing hand and always wins the max with his winners – usually, that is. For the past couple of months, though, Mr...read more

Moneymaker -- Turning $40 into $2.5 million

24 February 2005
Americans, gamblers in particular, love to invest (or bet) a little to win a lot. The lottery is one example of how they approach this, slot machines might be another. But when it comes to poker, only since the beginning of major poker tournaments have players fantasized about peeling off a couple of twenties and winding up with millions and the adoration of the world...read more

Roulette: Are You Just Spinning Your Wheels?

24 February 2005
The nobles of Europe a few centuries ago, who were all play and no work, found roulette to be their premier gambling game of first resort. In fact, it was usually their game of last resort as well since many a fortune, built on the back of serf labor and backbreaking taxes, went round and round and down and down until it vanished, poof, just like that! Those nobles have vanished as well. The earliest form of roulette wagering saw Roman soldiers spinning their shields and betting on which area would point at this or that person, place or thing...read more

Heard it on the River

23 February 2005
I don't feel charitable when I go home from a casino with my tail twixt my knees but I feel charitable when it comes to worthy organizations that need our help, and two such organizations will need our support come this April. They will involve Tunica and hopefully something in here will strike your heart…and your wallet. Oddly enough, both events happen on April 9 but they are so different in scope that it will be easy to choose between the two, if you have to make a choice. Since the BLUFF CITY TEXAS HOLD'EM tournament at GRAND CASINO in the meeting room next to the poker room starts at noon, it gets initial attention here...read more

Grand hosts state's first charity poker tournament

23 February 2005
The Mississippi Gaming Commission is feeling charitable these days, which might be a surprise for some but not for United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) of the Mid-South. The organization has received approval from the Commission to stage the first poker tournament in the state to raise funds for the Memphis-based group. The Bluff City No Limit Texas Hold'em Open will be held at Grand Casino April 9 and 10 and Grand is the Presenting and Host Sponsor for the tournament and playing a strong role in its support The tournament was the idea of Chris Decent, UCP vice president and a poker player himself...read more

Annie Duke Looks at the Impact of Internet Poker Sites

23 February 2005
The resurgence in popularity of live poker, fueled by the cable television shows, has served as the impetus behind another forum for the game: the internet. The number of online poker sites has increased dramatically in the last several years and the number of people who play the game on line has increased proportionately. Gambling online occupies a very "gray" area of legality...read more

When Will The New Slots Be in Your Casino?

22 February 2005
Each year after the Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas, I write about the flash and dash of the latest and greatest slot machines. And each year, I get e-mail from readers wondering when they're going to be able to play these games. Casino operators, especially on Midwestern riverboats, don't always install new games quickly enough to satisfy players eager to experience the latest bells and whistles. Still, many of the games featured in my recent review will be available to operators early this year...read more

Playing Roulette so that One Winning Bet Gets You Back

22 February 2005
The records of gambling history are replete with sad stories of sorry solid citizens who think they've surmised the supreme secret the bosses don't want anyone to know. It's raising their bets after every loss until the inevitable win boosts them out of the hole and over the top...read more

Programmed Near Misses and Randomness

21 February 2005
John, I have been reading your articles for about a week now and enjoy them. I am writing you in regards to the question you answered from Jeff on February 14, 2005. The subject was about the book Insider Slot Secrets. My wife wanted to purchase it in December but didn't know if it would be worth it...read more

Price of comp munchies and kitchen etiquette

21 February 2005
Dear Mark, You column last week was very interesting regarding RFID chips tracking your play. I'm with you, I too prefer playing anonymously, though working over the pit boss for an occasional buffet pass (I'm a low limit player, and that's usually the best I can do) is always my goal...read more
