Are There Any Tricks for Winning at Slots

18 July 2005
Why do most casinos make a big deal about "silver mining"? Aren't card counters and bucket/purse thieves more of a threat? You sound like someone who has been evicted from a casino for silver mining. For those who may not be familiar with the term, silver mining is walking around the casino looking for coins or credits left in slot machines. I don't think your average card counter is as big a threat as casinos make him or her out to be...read more

Everything's Ducky When You Play Quackers Video Slots

17 July 2005
I could go on and on about how this video slot by WMS will quack you up, or how you ought to take the plunge into its zaniness. But I won't. I think if I just simply tell you about this game you'll understand how truly wacky it is -- but a lot of fun to play...read more

Playing Suited Hands and "Connectors" in Texas Hold'em

16 July 2005
I'm amazed at how many new Texas Hold'em players are in the local card rooms these days. I'm also amazed at how wild most of these new players play. The other night I was in a $20/$40 Hold'em game at a local casino. The "under-the-gun" player (first to act) came in raising it to $40...read more

The Blues

15 July 2005
I had been in Las Vegas for two years, bouncing from job to job like a Mexican jumping bean. Pioneer Club: two weeks. Weekend radio gig: three months. Mint Hotel: year and a half. Landmark: one week. Don't ask me why, but I'd left the comforts and confines of the Mint to go to work at the brand new Landmark...read more

Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook Explodes with In-depth Analysis

13 July 2005
Which college grad from last year has gone on to the NFL? Who replaces these stars? Who are the backups in case the No. 1 guy gets hurt? These are key questions any college football bettor asks before the season opens. And these (and more) are the questions Chris Dortch and his staff answer in the 2005 Blue Ribbon College Football Yearbook (384 pages, paperbound, $21.95)...read more

Gambling for Groceries: Is It an Idea whose Time Has Come?

13 July 2005
Yet another state has authorized a modified form of casino gambling. The Pennsylvania legislature has approved slot parlors. Some of the facilities will be associated with race tracks. Others will be self-contained establishments. Details have yet to be finalized...read more

Slot Machines: Easy to Play, Difficult to Understand

13 July 2005
Slot machines are unlike any other gambling option in casinos across the country and around the world. They are the easiest of all the games to play: Just sit down, put in some money and press the button or pull the handle. You'll find out instantly whether you've won or lost. Table games and video poker, on the other hand, require some homework...read more

Beating Three Card Poker

12 July 2005
If there's a way to beat a casino game, somebody will figure it out. Three Card Poker play against the dealer should be an unbeatable game. The house edge, 2 percent of total action or 3.4 percent of the ante, is narrow enough that we can win sometimes, but in the long run the casino will grind out its profit. That's the way it's supposed to work, but sometimes there's a small glitch...read more

More on Two Pair in Deuces Wild

11 July 2005
I suspect that several other people have already told you this regarding your recent question about holding two pair in Deuces Wild VP, but here goes anyway.... The correct answer should have been, "It depends." If you are playing full-pay DW where quads pay 5 coins for 1 and a full house pays 3 for 1, then it is correct to hold only one pair -- I always seem to pick the wrong pair...read more

You'll Be Back Once You Try "The Terminator" Video Slot

10 July 2005
Not long ago I was walking through the neighborhood casino to the back wall where the new games first appear. There in the farthest corner of the place I saw it - a giant screen on which the words THE TERMINATOR VIDEO SLOT were twirling around, followed by WIN AWESOME JACKPOTS...read more
