Having fun playing slots

6 September 2008
Note: While the author prefers not playing casino games where he cannot get an edge, he realizes that many casino gamers do not want to take the time to develop advantage player skills. He also realizes that many advantage players visit the casino with spouses, family and friends who just want to relax and have some fun...read more

Deal Me In: Card counting isn't all it's cracked up to be

5 September 2008
Dear Mark: As a hobby, and only at home, I like to count down a deck of cards. As I said, I only do this at home and have never tried it on a live blackjack game. Before I do, I was curious as to if most blackjack players who learn to count cards actually end up being successful at beating the house, or am I, and they, wasting our time? I have to believe that the casino is not too keen on us beating them...read more

A ruin question

5 September 2008
I recently received the following email from one of my readers: Dear Don, My name is Padme, living in India and playing Blackjack in Nepal and Cambodia. Thanks for your great columns and advice. I am writing a very small, and very simple, book on betting at Blackjack for my friends only, mainly because I believe that an average to good player, with good to excellent betting decisions, will make more money at Blackjack than a good to excellent player with poor betting decisions...read more

Gaming history, sports betting, hockey mag and craps guide have wide appeal

4 September 2008
Have an old collectible chip and wondering about when the place that issued it opened or closed and where it was located -- as far back as the 1930s? Need a craps book to steer you to smarter bets or one that explains the various bets including odds and wrong bets? Have a friend who's got many questions about sports betting that you don't have the patience to answer? And finally, with pro hockey opening its 2008-09 season in October, where can you find a schedule, rosters and team evaluations and predictions on same? Well, here are the four resources that answer most of those questions and a few more: The late, great Harvey Fuller, who is revered as one of the most respected and authoritative chip collectors of our time, compiled a book which has just been reprinted after being unavailable for years...read more

On Rare Occasions Even Dealers Make Mistakes

3 September 2008
The men and women who deal casino games are among the most scrutinized work force in the country. Their every move is captured by "eye-in-the-sky" security cameras, and they are constantly being monitored by supervisory floor personnel. But that doesn't mean they are infallible...read more

Should controlled shooters still favor the odds bet over the pass line bet?

2 September 2008
Tom is a dice controller. At least he says he would be if he had time to practice. "I read [Frank Scoblete's] Golden Touch Dice Control Revolution, and I understand the theory," he told me on the phone. "Putting it into practice is something else again...read more

Vile evil tool of the oppressor class

1 September 2008
Re: Have the paybacks on full-pay video poker machines gone down? Dear vile evil tool of the oppressor class: You keep saying that slots/video poker is 'fair' because (1) casino's can make money just by the house edge and (2) regulator's have to approve the technology used and track the handle and (3) the fall out from getting caught at cheating will destroy the casino, most of which are now owned by large public corporations. But we know this isn't so because: (1) me and my buddy's used to make money at the slots/video poker and now we don't...read more

Can I use a controlled throw and bet the hard ways?

31 August 2008
To Golden Touch Craps: Let me get this clear. When you guys go to a casino you mostly go with three to four guys. And when you bet you never play the hard ways and mostly the way you wager your bets its on the come and the place bets. Seeing I have the hots for the hard ways, why can't I just shoot like on your DVD and try to make hard ways instead of playing conservative? Yours truly, William Dear William: OK, William, you got some things right and some things wrong...read more

How do the number of coins played affect payback percentages?

30 August 2008
I'm a little confused. If the RNG is the only thing that controls the outcome on a slot machine, then how do the different amounts you play enter into the payback percentages? Leese Dear Leese, The only thing the number of coins you played affects is how much you get paid for winning combinations...read more
