Interview with a blackjack dealer

5 November 2010
I sat down with a veteran blackjack dealer and began firing questions at her. You may find what she had to say about her career very interesting. How long have you been dealing blackjack? Ten years. All with the same casino? No, I've worked in four different casinos. Why did you change casinos? I hated my boss in one case...read more

This and that about craps

4 November 2010
Don't pass and don't come bets can be taken down if you desire to do so. Why? Because the house edge on the darkside bets comes on the first placement of the bet, but the game shifts heavily in favor of the darksider once the bet is up on a number...read more

Ameristar Gets Imaginative with Slot Floor

3 November 2010
A great deal of thought and marketing strategy is devoted to the slot machine floor plan of any casino, but Ameristar in East Chicago, Indiana has taken it to the next level. The casino is making its vast inventory of slots a form of "shopping" experience for gamblers by utilizing target marketing to differentiate among the newest games, the most popular games, and even giving bargain hunters some perks with the older games. Every slot director in the country arranges the games in such a manner as to make them attractive to play and visible to guests from various points on the floor in an effort to derive maximum revenue from each and every machine. The amount of play the machines receive during any given period of time is closely monitored...read more

Cutting Edge Craps

2 November 2010
During a seminar break a few years ago, I found myself dining with gambling author Frank Scoblete and the craps shooter known as "the Dominator." I don't remember if it was Frank's Golden Touch Craps seminar, which I attended as a student, or one of several seminars where I served as an instructor in other games...read more

What can falling apples and feathers teach you about casino gambling?

1 November 2010
The laws of science generally say – in effect – "do this to get that." The laws of probability tell you what outcomes that are possible and the prospects each will occur. Gamblers might prefer the second type was more like the first. Of course, in this case, there wouldn't be any gambling...read more

Slot player's bankroll

1 November 2010
Hi! My question is about budgeting for slot play on a casino trip, specifically land-based (not online) slot machines, not video poker. How much money do you recommend the average slot player bring for each day (for overnight + trips) or hour (for a quick trip)? I am looking for a formula such as: "x" * Total Cost per Spin * Hours of Anticipated Slot Playing. Thanks a lot for your help...read more

Evaluating two craps bets

31 October 2010
Dear Frank, In your opinion what would be the better bet in craps? 1. After the point has been established bet $64 across (minimum bet is $10) and let it work for 3 rolls, then take all bets down. Or 2. After the point has been established, bet $20 on the number 5, $18 on the numbers 6 and 8, and $10 on the field for a total bet of $66...read more

The fire bet: the hottest new craps attraction

28 October 2010
Craps has a cornucopia of bets; some good, some bad, some horrible. Smart players stick to the good bets with house edges under 2%, such as the pass, don't pass, the come, don't come, the placing of the 6 and 8, and also the buying of the 4 and 10 at $25 and $50 if the commission is paid on wins only...read more
