What are the odds of being dealt a four-card royal?

31 July 2011
My wife and I have played video poker since 1985. When they changed from coin in/coin out it seems like they don't hit like they used to. Every visit now seems like I get dealt four to the royal over and over and it never hits. What are the odds of being dealt four to the royal? I have been discussing this with the General Manager of Pinnacle Entertainment and I am telling him that video poker seems just like slots now...read more

Staying in the Game

30 July 2011
At blackjack, one item that casino managers look for when trying to spot card counters is their bet spread. Remember the casinos read the same books that we read. When the count jumps up from 1 to 6 positive, we very much want to get that big bet out there. This is a big no-no...read more

The Price of Convenience

29 July 2011
Several months ago my nephew came to me seeking financial advice. He is a recent college graduate living on his own and working full time. His job pays him a fairly good salary, but he complained that he never seemed to have enough money left at the end of the month after he paid his rent, student loans, car payment and "daily living expenses." When I inquired as to what he meant by daily living expenses, he told me "food, gas, coffee and stuff like that." I told him his problem was probably in the amount of money he was spending on what he called his daily living expenses and suggested to him that he try an experiment I read about in a financial planning magazine...read more

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

28 July 2011
Q. I thoroughly enjoyed your description of the "The Hangover" machine. It sounds more like a video game than a slot machine. I have a question though. Why does it sound like you had any control over the outcome of your winnings when you "touched a sword and revealed a 160-credit award"? In previous articles, you said the random-number generator (RNG) determined your fate the instant you pushed the button to start the game...read more

Odds versus probability

27 July 2011
I absolutely love your column and answers to all our questions. It's nice to know there is someone who tells it like it is with no jive one way or the other. I would like to know your thoughts on possibility (the odds) vs. probability...read more

Basic strategy does not assume the dealer has a ten

26 July 2011
It was time for a get-together with my old blackjack-playing buddy Bob. I've mentioned him before. We'll talk about kids — and in his case, grandkids — baseball and life in general, just like normal people. But at some point, a blackjack issue always pops up. "You know me," he said...read more

Do not bring the kiddies to the casinos!

25 July 2011
Dear Frank: This really, really, really bugs me -- parents who bring their little kids to the casinos. I've been to Vegas and seen kids who can barely walk being dragged through the casino by their parents. Worse, I see teenagers 13 and 14 years old at the pools and slowly ambling through the casino too...read more

How'd you like a game where the house counts the cards for you?

25 July 2011
The early 20th Century Harvard social philosopher, Georgio Santayana, is famously quoted for saying, “Those who do not remember history are condemned to repeat it.” He did, in fact, write this in 1906 (in “The Life of Reason”). But he was paraphrasing the Irish political philosopher, Edmund Burke, who noted pretty much the same thing a century earlier...read more

Advantage Play, It Ain't For Everyone

24 July 2011
Advantage play was once confined to mathematically gifted computer programmers moonlighting as blackjack card counters and slovenly dressed, greasy-haired nerdy poker players with an unnatural ability to instantly calculate odds and probability...read more

Parlaying the field bet

23 July 2011
Jerry "Stickman" received this letter from a reader: Hi Stickman, Always enjoy your posts as I do the other guys' as well. Regarding your comments on the field, I have an interesting idea. Since the field pays 2.8% with a 3x's bet on the 12 in some casinos and considering a parlay situation, I'm finding an interesting scenario. Consider this: If you place a bet for $5 on the field and parlay a win, it now becomes $10 bet...read more
