Ask the Slot Expert: Comparing slot comps

18 January 2012
Hi John, Great site that I always check in on. I have a comp question. Let's assume I go to a casino with the intention of playing a 3-reel $5 machine at 2 coins, $10 per spin. I intend to run $10,000 through the machine and quit. Assuming I play 6 spins per minute, ($60)--$3,600 per hour the $10k gives me about 2 3/4 hours of play, running $10k through the machine. Another player plays a 3-reel $25 machine at 2 coins, $50 per spin, at 6 spins per minute = $300 per minute...read more

Giving slot players a choice

17 January 2012
When it comes to game design, I'm always on board with giving players choices. Whether we're talking the strategy options inherent in video poker, the choice of bonus event packages that come with the decision to defend or attack earth in WMS Gaming's Attack From Mars/Revenge From Mars slots or the chance to choose volatility in games such as Incredible Technology's Magic Touch line, letting the players have it their way enhances the casino experience. That volatility choice is on its way toward becoming a mini-trend as video slots continue to evolve even after they've taken over the largest floor space in modern casinos...read more

The 12 superstitions about craps: #7 - The testes tanking

16 January 2012
The 12 most popular superstitions at the game of craps are adhered to or believed by most craps players -- so if you want to play the game and not be thought a craps barbarian, you should know them. Keep in mind that individuals add their own superstitions too, so you might hear someone yelling some incoherent thing at the table which, to him, will ward off the coming of the ominous 7, or bring it on if he is a darkside player. A man who has never shot the dice before will have a bad roll. It's like the first time with sex: Most men just don't know what they are doing and the "roll" ends pretty quickly...read more

Ask the Slot Expert: Does my computer have an RNG?

15 January 2012
My computer does not have a RNG. So how do the various video poker training programs select the hands? A Random Number Generator (RNG) is just a function built using common mathematical operations. Although it can be put on a chip and be a discrete component on a logic board, it can also just be part of a program running on your computer or part of the program running a slot machine. The video poker training programs you run on your PC have their own built-in RNGs. Best of luck in and out of the casinos, John Send your slot and video poker questions to John Robison, Slot Expert, at slotexpert@comcast.net...read more
