When You Know the Dealer's Hole Card

16 July 2023
QUESTION: I was playing blackjack a few weeks ago, and got that rare table where the dealer was tipping his hole card on almost every hand. It made iffy hands a lot easier. If I had 15 and the dealer had a 6 up, I'd normally stand, but if he had a 5 down I'd hit instead. It left me wondering a couple of things. ... (read more)

New Video Poker Versions

9 July 2023
When I write about video poker, I often fall back on 9-6 Double Double Bonus Poker. It's long been one of the most popular video poker games, and the 9-6 version is more commonly available than high-paying versions of other games. Tightening of video poker pay tables has hit even Double Double Bonus. ... (read more)

Figuring the Odds

2 July 2023
QUESTION: I've read the odds are the same on every play no matter what has happened before. If roulette has stopped on black five times in a row, the odds on another black are still the same. If a craps shooter has rolled five sevens in a row, odds are the same. Even slot machines, odds are the same even after jackpots or winning streaks. ... (read more)

Quit While You're Ahead?

25 June 2023
QUESTION: I wanted to get your opinion on a system. My sister and I play slots together once in a while, and her new boyfriend is a craps player. At a potluck on Memorial Day, he was expounding loudly on how to win at any casino game. He said that in any day at a casino, there's a point at which you're ahead. ... (read more)

Good Strategy That Might Look Bad

18 June 2023
Blackjack Bob and I met for breakfast in the first week of June. In a major upset, it took all the way until the food arrived before the talk turned to blackjack. The turn from families and baseball was inevitable, and it was Bob who broke the ice. "I had a run of soft 18 hands and 19 hands last week, and I'm afraid I horrified a couple of players," he said. ... (read more)

Strip Games Getting Tougher

11 June 2023
QUESTION: I read an article on Apple News and I wanted to get your take. It said visitors to Las Vegas were losing more money than they used to, and it was because blackjack payoffs were lower and roulette wheels had triple zeroes. How much difference does that really make? I love Las Vegas and don't want to stop going. ... (read more)

Video Poker Strategy in General

4 June 2023
Game-specific strategies for video poker have been a staple for as long as I've been writing about casino games, but every now and then I get a request to pull back a little. One such request came via email from Marie, who said she sticks to slots but that her sister Lynn had started taking an occasional video poker flutter. ... (read more)

For or To?

28 May 2023
QUESTION: Whenever I read about video poker, I see payoffs "for one," like a flush might pay 5-for-1. In other games, I'm used to 5-to-1, or 5-1, or 5:1. Why does video poker specify "for"? ANSWER: Odds-for-1 mean your original bet is included in the payoff. Odds-to-1 mean you're getting that payoff in addition to keeping your bet. ... (read more)

Slot Myth Busting

21 May 2023
Over the years. I've tried to help slot players through a little myth-busting. Nonetheless, myths persist. It's easy to see why. Table games allow you to see cards being dealt, dice being rolled or the ball rolling around the wheel. You can't see random numbers being generated. Let's take a fresh look at a few of the common myths about modern slot machines. ... (read more)

Total Blackjack Hands

14 May 2023
QUESTION: A while ago you wrote there were 34 possible starting hands in blackjack, or 55 if the composition mattered. You explained that some advanced players made different plays if a hard 12 was an 8 and a 4 than if it was a 10 and a 2. What about the order in which you receive the cards? Does it matter if you get the 10 first and then the 2 instead of the 2 first and then the 10. ... (read more)
