The 12 superstitions about craps: #11 - Chip counting adds up to seven13 February 2012
The 12 most popular superstitions at the game of craps are adhered to or believed by most craps players -- so if you want to play the game and not be thought a craps barbarian, you should know them. Keep in mind that individuals add their own superstitions too so you might hear someone yelling some incoherent thing at the table which to him will ward off the coming of the ominous 7 or bring it on if he is a Darkside player. Counting your chips while a shooter is rolling will bring on the seven. Hopefully you actually have some chips to count! Unless the dice have eyes, they can't say to themselves, "That creep is counting his chips. OK, bub, a seven is coming right now!" I think this superstition follows the idea that any untoward movement at the table can distract the shooter and bring out the seven. In a random game, you would have a whole circus of clowns laughing and cavorting all around the table and it will have no effect upon the nature of the game.
