Rate of growth slowed for tribal gaming in 2006

28 June 2007
UNITED STATES -- American Indian casinos generated a record $25.5 billion in gaming revenue during 2006, but the year-over-year percentage increase was the lowest in nearly two decades since Congress enacted the law that legalized gambling on tribal land. The annual Indian Gaming Industry Report, authored by Los Angeles-based economist Alan Meister, showed gaming revenue climbed almost 11 percent over 2005...read more

H.O.R.S.E. final table set

28 June 2007
The most anticipated final table of this year's World Series of Poker is finally set. Amnon Filippi and Freddy Deeb have impressive chip stacks after four days of play in the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship, but there isn't a slouch at the final table, and it will be a real grind to win the title and the $2.3 million first-place prize. It took exactly 55 levels to get to the final table, so when they begin play Thursday at 2 p.m...read more

Tournament structure, 'Sequestrium' top player concerns at WSOP 'Town Meeting'

27 June 2007
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The leadership group of the World Series of Poker held an open town meeting for players and media on Wednesday morning, and about two dozen people were in attendance to air their concerns about different aspects of the WSOP. The three major concerns voiced by the players were the tournament structures in limit events, the space for players and tables, and the decision to sequester players and broadcast several final tables on the Internet on a one-hour delay. "There's too much play in the beginning and not enough in the middle levels," said Steve Hohn, a professional poker player who was mostly concerned about the tournament structures...read more

A work in progress - Part three of our interview with WSOP Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack

27 June 2007
World Series of Poker Commissioner Jeffrey Pollack has been a busy man over the last two years. He has been the catalyst for change in the WSOP, and while some of those changes have been met with initial disapproval from players, the majority of them have been embraced. Casino City reporter Aaron Todd sat down with Pollack prior to the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E tournament for a three-part interview. In our final installment, Pollack talks about what he has learned this year, corporate partnerships, and improving the player experience...read more

H.O.R.S.E. tournament brings new games to poker fans

27 June 2007
Since the $50,000 H.O.R.S.E. World Championship at the World Series of Poker dipped under 15 tables on Monday, my purple media pass (the lowest in the WSOP Media caste system) has banished me outside the tournament area. As a result, I've been watching the tournament with the audience, who are sometimes piled three or four deep at the rail. Many of the fans watching have no idea what's going on inside those ropes...read more

It's all in the Pictures

26 June 2007
Apparently it's all in the pictures. The GPWA team has been noticing that our GPWA Times readers like pictures, especially pictures that include cute girls. Imagine that. There has been one exception to the rule, however...if you haven't already noticed, I slacked off last week and did not produce an article for the GPWA newsletter...read more
