Casinos reluctant to replace older slot machines

6 October 2011
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- If Patti Hart felt singled out, she didn't show it. The chief executive officer of slot machine giant International Game Technology had to endure a couple of body blows from her fellow panelists during a Global Gaming Expo round-table discussion Wednesday by female executives on the state of the industry and the economy. Casino operators expressed a continued reluctance to replace older slot machines with some newer games displayed in the G2E's trade show. Isle of Capri Casinos CEO Virginia McDowell, after telling the audience that "dysfunctional government in Washington D.C." continues to cause uncertainty among the nation's consumers and dampen spending, said slot machines were not in the regional gaming company's budget. "I can spend $200,000 on 10 new slot machines or renovating one of our casino's restaurants," McDowell said...read more

Heard it on the River: Madam Chief a first for Choctaws

4 October 2011
Phyllis Anderson is a busy lady but finds time for three children, is stepmother to four more and grandmother to two. Now she has added to her workload and was inaugurated Tuesday as the first female chief of the proud Mississippi Band of Choctaws…an energetic and ambitious tribe that has carved out a thriving complex in the heart of the piney-hardwood forests of the southeast central region of the Magnolia State. She took her oath before the Tribal Council in a closed forum and later smiled and waved through a celebration parade on Highway 16 that runs through the middle of the reservation splitting its two large casinos, SilverStar and Golden Moon, where she later made her first address to the tribe and assembled guests. She ran on a platform to create harmony in the government and to lay a strong foundation for the next generation of Choctaws...read more

Shuffle Master turns focus to the Internet

3 October 2011
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- The importance of Internet gaming at this year's Global Gaming Expo will quickly be noticed in the exhibition booth for Shuffle Master Inc. On display will be Shuffle Interactive, the Las Vegas-based company's newest division, which is creating Internet versions of Shuffle Master's proprietary table games such as Ultimate Texas Hold'em and Three Card Poker, for licensed use by online gaming websites outside of the United States. For Americans, Shuffle Master is creating free versions of the table games for social media and applications that can be downloaded and played on interactive platforms, such as tablets, smartphones and other devices. "It's about building brand awareness for those games," Shuffle Master Chief Executive Officer Gavin Isaacs said. For now, at least. Eventually, Isaacs hopes American gamblers will be able to play those games and other Shuffle Master products on Internet gambling websites in the U.S. Internet gaming and the potential for its federally approved legalization and regulation overshadows much of this year's G2E, which runs Tuesday through Thursday at the Sands Expo and Convention Center...read more
