Top 10 casino openings and expansions for December 2023

As anticipation builds for the long-awaited unveiling of Fontainebleau Las Vegas on Wednesday, just before midnight local time, let's take a look at several U.S. casino openings and expansions that have unfolded since our last update in September.

10. New hotel at Hollywood Casino Columbus
On 28 November, a groundbreaking ceremony for a new hotel at Hollywood Casino - Columbus took place.

The Ohio hotel, with an estimated budget of approximately $100 million, will be attached to the existing property. It is expected to include 180 rooms, meeting space, an additional restaurant, and local partnerships and amenities that will be announced at a later date.

“Since opening in 2012, our Columbus property has experienced tremendous growth, and the addition of a hotel at Hollywood Casino Columbus will create a true regional destination,” said Jay Snowden, CEO and President of PENN Entertainment.

9. Suncoast Hotel and Casino adds restaurant and updates high-limit room
Elsewhere in Las Vegas, Suncoast Hotel & Casino raised the bar for fine dining with its new William B’s Steakhouse, which opened on 8 November.

The new, 6,940-square-foot restaurant in Las Vegas features a cocktail lounge menu opening with an array of light bites and a Pan-Roasted Seafood “Tower Hour” from 4 to 5 p.m. featuring Maine lobster, king crab, gulf shrimp, Atlantic scallops, little neck clams, mussels and calamari.

In addition, the Boyd Gaming property revamped its high-limit room to provide a more upscale gaming experience for guests. With amenities such as a High Limit Bar featuring hand-crafted cocktails, private gaming tables and new reels and video poker machines.

8. Peter Lugar Steak House hold grand opening at Caesars Palace
A month ago, Caesars Entertainment and Peter Luger executives celebrated the highly-anticipated opening of Peter Luger Steak House Las Vegas at Caesars Palace

Since opening in mid-October, Peter Luger Steak House Las Vegas has welcomed more than 11,000 guests and served more than 10 tons of beef. Caesars Entertainment designed a state-of-the-art dry-aging room below the restaurant, which is home to $1 million worth of beef.

The restaurant spans 8,700 square feet and seats more than 300 people throughout the main dining room, large central bar and private dining options.

7. Seamark Seafood & Cocktails to open at Encore Boston Harbor
Carver Road Hospitality is set to make its inaugural expansion into New England with the April 2024 debut of Seamark Seafood & Cocktails at Encore Boston Harbor.

Situated adjacent to the resort's Garden Lobby and across from the Ferris wheel, Seamark Seafood & Cocktails will boast New England seafood favorites, featuring pier-to-plate cold-water fish, lobster, and shellfish available.

The restaurant will include an 82-seat main dining room, a 30-seat alcove dining room, 41-seat showcase bar and lounge, 34-seat outdoor terrace, 21-seat corridor terrace, and 16-seat private dining room.

6. Silverton Casino Lodge reopens hotel rooms
Rooms at the newly renovated Silverton Casino Lodge — located at the south end of Las Vegas Valley — are open following a complete $40 renovation, creating a new boutique hotel experience to anchor the casino resort.

In addition to new rooms, guests are also invited to try new experiences, like Wine Time, a self-guided nightly wine-tasting experience at one of the resort’s lounges, and Social Hour, a refined happy hour at Twin Creeks Steakhouse.

On top of all that, Sundance Café resumed its 24-hour-a-day format, reviving its menu of favorites, along with Silverton’s Mermaid Swim appearances in its 117,00-gallon aquarium that have expanded to seven days a week.

Coming to the resort in early 2024 is an all-new $10 million backyard and pool renovation called The Swimming Hole, which will include poolside dining, sports and movies at the pool, cabanas, fire pits and more.

5. Churchill Downs opens Derby City Gaming Downtown
Last week, Churchill Downs Incorporated announced the opening of Derby City Gaming Downtown in Louisville, Kentucky.

The $90 million investment marks the company’s sixth historical racing machine entertainment venue in Kentucky. The public grand opening festivities included a commemorative ribbon cutting and a $40,000 charitable donation to Norton Healthcare Foundation and The Hope Buss.

The 43,000 square foot, two-story Kentucky Derby themed entertainment venue includes a gaming floor with 500 Horse Racing Machines.

DCG Downtown offers three food and beverage experiences. First Turn Sports Bar & Stage hosts the property’s Race & Sports Book along with a stage for live entertainment, Trophy Bar Bourbon & Cigars offers the finest bourbons and hand-rolled cigars with a smoking patio and Fascinator Wine Bar provides an intimate atmosphere with a refined wine list and small bites.

4. DraftKings Sportsbook coming to Golden Nugget in Biloxi
The plans call for a new, expansive retail sportsbook area that will open in January 2024. Golden Nugget - Biloxi will transform a portion of the former buffet into the new DraftKings Sportsbook.

The space will include three video walls with LED screens, and a viewing area with VIP and stadium seating. In addition to the updated viewing experience, the retail sportsbook will also include 17 live betting kiosks, and five betting windows.

The current sportsbook and kiosks will remain available for guests to enjoy and bet on their favorite sports while the new area for the DraftKings Sportsbook location is being constructed over the next month.

3. Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto opens new poker room
On 9 November, Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto at Woodbine Racetrack opened its new poker room with all 30 tables operating around the clock, seven days a week.

Players at Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto, Great Blue Heron Casino and Hotel and Elements Casino Brantford will combine their “Bad Beat” Jackpots. This progressive jackpot, fueled by contributions from every qualifying hand played in the participating poker rooms, offers players an additional chance to win.

The poker room offers both No-Limit and Limit stakes. For those waiting their turn, the room also includes electronic table games and slots.

2. Sandy’s Racing and Gaming celebrates grand opening
On 26 October, Governor Andy Beshear helped open the doors at Sandy's Racing and Gaming – a $75 million entertainment facility in Eastern Kentucky.

The 75,000 square-foot facility features nearly 700 historical horse racing games, two performance stages and a BetMGM Race & Sportsbook.

The project will also include Kentucky's only quarter horse racetrack and an equestrian center, located on 182 acres behind Sandy's. While track construction is officially set to begin in early 2024, the first races are set to happen there in 2025.

The 5,200 square-foot sportsbook features dozens of leather recliners and three cinema-sized screens. Daily entertainment will take place on two stages, which include dueling pianos, as well as local and national performers. Country star and Boyd County native Cole Chaney starred as the opening-night headliner, while last year's American Idol winner Noah Thompson delivered a surprise performance.

1. Durango Casino Resort in Las Vegas opens
Last Tuesday, Station Casinos opened the doors to Durango Casino Resort, the newest luxury destination in Southwest Las Vegas.

The state-of-the-art resort features a unique design set across an 83,000-square-foot casino, more than 200 guestrooms and suites, convention and meeting spaces, a pool with private cabanas, outdoor social areas, and free parking.

Durango Casino Resort offers tourists and locals a sportsbook, dining options, Las Vegas’ “Hall of Foods,” and personalized hospitality for which Station Casinos is known.
