My Dinner with Jean (and Brad and John)

20 November 2001
Whenever I'm in Las Vegas, I like to check out new casinos, especially those that cater to locals and are likely to have good video poker and blackjack. Still, at the end of a busy Wednesday, packed with seminars and a trip around the showroom floor at the Global Gaming Expo in the first week of October, I'd normally opt to relax closer to my home base at the Tropicana toward the south end of the Strip...read more

Editing Luck and Dumb Gambling Strategies - Part 1

19 November 2001
All humankind is a work in progress. As such, we need lots of editing. Luckily, we are given it. Religion edits the human incline towards evil and directs us towards good and God. Medicine edits us by creating regimens that can increase the number of chapters in our particular book and that can make the turning of our pages not quite so painful as they were in the past...read more

Continuous shufflers revisited

18 November 2001
Many casinos have installed continuous shuffling machines (CSM) on their blackjack tables. These machines are a combination shuffler and dealing shoe that contain 4 (or sometimes 5) decks of cards. The dealer deals the cards from this device and then after one or several rounds picks up the discards and places them back into the CSM, where the cards are randomly mixed with the unplayed cards in the shoe (i.e., think of it as one shoe of cards that are continuously in play)...read more

New Craps Book Answers Your Questions

17 November 2001
Some craps players have dozens, if not hundreds, of questions about their favorite game. So many myths exist in craps, so much ritual and history, so many bets and combinations of bets, that knowing it all is a seemingly daunting task. That's why craps books are the second leading sellers in the bookstores and on the Internet behind blackjack books...read more

Land of Many Legends

16 November 2001
Jutting out from the mountain, Crazy Horse, astride his galloping horse, points across the plains to where his people, the Oglala Sioux, once roamed. Standing at the base of this gigantic sculpture and looking up, I am awed by its beauty and the genius of the sculptor...read more

Permanent Casinos are Part of the Solution

14 November 2001
Detroit's newly elected Mayor and City Council are set to take office in January and our new City leaders will not be starved for work nor will they be searching for issues to address. The issues are apparent, they include crime, city services, abandoned buildings, public transportation, health care, public schools, and the need for a considerable improvement in City services for residents and businesses...read more

Eliminate Competition and Casino Quality Declines

Recommendation to Tip Dealers Generates Controversy

13 November 2001
Several weeks ago, I relayed to you a letter from a dealer who wanted me to put in a word in favor of tipping. I did, pointing out that casino dealers are low-paid service employees who make their living via tips. That doesn't mean players must, or even should, tip rude dealers, incompetent dealers or dealers who are more focused on hustling tips than giving decent service...read more
