Low-paying VP machines get play, high-paying VP machines sit idle

10 March 2008
In almost every casino I play in, I'll search for a 9/6 video poker machine among all the 8/5s. Many times I'll find an empty 9/6, and next to it a frenzied player is eagerly slapping an 8/5 machine. The same goes for the joker and wild card video poker games...read more

What do you think of my craps hedge?

9 March 2008
Hey, Frank, Love the articles. I just want to get your opinion on a betting strategy I have been using lately at the tables. I start by placing a don't pass bet before the come out roll. Then, when a point is established, I place the six and eight...read more

Questions from the mailbag

8 March 2008
Over the past couple of months I've received several letters from my readers. Here are three such. Somewhere I read about an expert(?) gambler that charts the craps table. Isn't this heresy for number guys like yourself? The dice or table cannot remember...read more

Deal Me In: Ultimate Hold'em 101

7 March 2008
Dear Mark: How about one of your Gambling 101's on a table game called Ultimate Texas Hold'em. I'd like to give it a go, but would love a primer from you before I try it out. David L. ShuffleMaster's Ultimate Texas Hold'em pretty much has it all, David: aggressive betting, yet the ability to check through the river, optional Trips bonus bet (see question below), and yes, those bad beats and miracle draws...read more

The secrets of system 31

7 March 2008
Pssst... Wanna know a secret? How about the secrets of System 31? This is a popular method sold for high prices through mail order and gets few requests for refunds because its good points far outweigh the negatives. The 31 in the title refers to 31 times the multiple of your unit bet, so if you are a $1 unit bettor, then you need just $31 to play this system. Wanna find out how craps pros use System 31 to increase their profits? Let's find out now how they do it – and how you can do it too. First, if you are at the $5 level, you will need $155 (31 x $5) and if you're a $10 bettor you'll need $310 (31 x $10)...read more

What about zero house edge games?

6 March 2008
Dear Frank, I have recently come across an online casino which offers a variety of zero house edge games. Below are the zero house edge games which they offer: Zero Roulette - removed the zero from the wheel, which means you get true odds on every bet. Zero Baccarat - reduced the commission on the banker bet to 2.75 per cent Zero Blackjack - pay out 2 - 1 for a suited natural Blackjack and a five-card 21. Zero Jacks or Better - With a Royal Flush payout 22 per cent higher (Payout for a Royal Flush on zero Jacks or Better with 5 coins is 4880 compared to 4000 of the normal casino payouts.) My first question is, now that the unforgiving house advantage has been removed from these games, is there any way of beating these games in the long run by applying various betting strategies, bet spread, money management rules, etc.? Or would the end result just be a no win-no lose situation, i.e...read more

Heartland Poker Tour is flush with success

5 March 2008
For every high profile professional poker player who has gained pop culture stardom via the popularity of the World Series of Poker and the World Poker Tour on TV, there's an average man or woman who loves the game just as much and longs for a tournament circuit in which they can participate. Two enterprising poker fans, Todd Anderson and Greg Lang, realized the need for a top class tour for average people who hold down regular jobs and enjoy putting their poker skills to the test under tournament conditions...read more

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

4 March 2008
Q. Can you explain "mystery" jackpots to me? You know, the slot machines like Fort Knox or Cash Express where you can win a jackpot or go to a bonus round even though it doesn't look like you have a winner on the reels. How do you actually win on those games? Do you have to play for a certain amount of time? A...read more

Are the video poker machines I play fair?

3 March 2008
Hello, John, I've read a lot of your articles and respect you for your knowledge of the game, but I really must say that I cannot make "The Leap of Faith" anymore. The Leap of Faith? Believing that a video poker machine is dealing me cards in a relatively random way (We have that RNG programming, right?) without any other type of influence dictating or controlling the play of the game. I play at a very large "tribal" casino in the Northeast...read more
