No filet mignon this time

1 August 2008
Dear Mark: What is the best way to play $25 on the crap game. I say place it on the pass line, while my friend believes you should place it on either the 6 or 8? Your decision gets one of us a steak dinner. Jeff F. You are in the know, Jeff, sort of, but only for a Whopper at Burger King and not a steak dinner, and here's why...read more

Playing a "Hopping 7's" Progression

1 August 2008
Periodically people ask me about craps betting systems. Almost all of them rely on the premise that certain numbers are due because they haven't appeared for a while. I normally tell them that in a random game you cannot beat the math of the game...read more

Actions Speak Louder Than Words at Poker Table

30 July 2008
Jarrod Musano's passion for poker doesn't prevent him from playing the game he dearly loves just because he's deaf. His inability to hear what's going on at the table is a challenge, but that hasn't discouraged him and other deaf and hearing impaired persons from pursing opportunities for the chance to compete against the best players in the world. That's why Musano and five of his poker enthusiast classmates from the Rochester Institute of Technology founded the National Deaf Poker Tour (NDPT) two years ago to fill the need for an organization that would give deaf players recognition and open the door for them to compete on the world poker stage. The inaugural tournament was held at Trump Taj Mahal Casino in Atlantic City in March of 2006...read more

Why I write about casino games

29 July 2008
After 14 years of writing this column, I don't often get asked a question I've never been asked before. But I received one via e-mail in June, one that I've sometimes wondered why nobody has asked. "Why do you do what you do?" asked the e-mailer, who identified himself as Chas...read more

Will participation slots ever disappear from the slot floor?

28 July 2008
Hi John- I'm a part-time student who's just starting to learn about the gaming industry, trying to learn as much as I can, so first off thank you for your books and articles. They're more consistently helpful and objective than so much of the other literature out there. I write with a general industry question about participation slots...read more

Should I play in a bankrupt casino?

27 July 2008
GreekTown Casino in Detroit has just filed bankruptcy. I can't imagine how this can be since just about everyone I know comes home much lighter than when they go....but...my question is: Is it an even worse time to play the slots there? Will they adjust the payouts to help compensate for their apparent losses? How in the world can they go bankrupt with the amount of people and money that passes thru there anyway? Thanks for your newsletter...read more

Is a blackjack table that allows a bigger bet spread better?

26 July 2008
Hi, Frank: I play table games in a number of casinos and most of them have a 1 to 20 minimum to maximum spread, but there is one where the spread is 1 to 40. Which casino is better to play at between these different spreads on both blackjack and American roulette? M...read more

How Often Will the Dealer Bust That Blackjack Hand?

25 July 2008
Say you're sitting at the blackjack table and are dealt an 11 as your starting hand. The dealer has a wimpy-looking 5 up. The obviously correct play is to double down. So you put another chip next to your original bet and take your one card for a double bet...read more
