Ask the slot expert

20 December 2010
John, This is a follow on question to "How does a slot machine use the numbers from the RNG?" Could you provide the outcome table for the example you gave? I.e., is the example a penny, quarter, dollar, etc. machine, and what are the possible outcomes -- $20 for a cherry, $100 for three 7s, $1,000 for three triple bars, etc., for example...read more

Is dice control necessary to get an edge at craps?

19 December 2010
Dear Frank, In your book Beat the Craps out of the Casinos (original and expanded edition), the Supersystem uses the "doey-don't" and takes full odds on the come bets once the 5-Count is reached. If any of the four numbers you are on are not hit for three rolls, you call your odds "off" for two rolls and repeat this process until the shooter throws a "seven out." As you correctly pointed out, you are mathematically playing a near "even" game with the house, avoiding risking your bankroll on horrendous rolls, and if the shooter "sevens out" while your odds are "off", you do not lose any money since there is no money at risk...read more

Following My Own Advice

18 December 2010
Many of my columns deal with money management and being a responsible player who makes the best decisions in the casino. My columns are not just ideas that I write about. I honestly practice what I preach. However, I am only human and sometimes I make the mistake of not following my own advice and deviating from my own personal rules...read more

Mystic craps

16 December 2010
Anyone who has performed an activity that relies on skill knows that the mind is a powerful focal point of success once you have the skill to actually be good at that activity. Athletes know this. There are days when you are on and days when you are off...read more

More Useful Information for Casino Goers

15 December 2010
The built-in house advantage that casinos wield over all the games they offer is relentless, a virtual guarantee to wear down every gambler's bankroll over the long haul. But did you know the speed at which people play the games has a direct impact on how hard the house edge will hit them? Because you can play a slot machine faster than any table game, it is important to play at a slower pace...read more

Bally's U-Spin technology is a winner

14 December 2010
When Bally Technologies showed off its U-Spin technology at G2E 2009, Bally was pretty sure it had a winner. It did. Since an April roll-out, more than 1,200 Cash Spin games have been installed. At G2E 2010 in November at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Bally showed a number of U-Spin games, ready to follow up on the success of Cash Spin, the first in the line...read more

When 2 plus 2 don't equal 4, good data can yield bad conclusions

13 December 2010
Once upon a time, in a land of glitz and money, a gambler named Ralph devised a way to win more often by switching bets based on patterns seen in past series of rounds. It applied to craps, baccarat, and roulette which involve wagers on different outcomes – such as Pass or Don't Pass, Player or Banker, and Red or Black in the respective games...read more

Do bad blackjack players affect me?

13 December 2010
Dear Frank, I play blackjack a couple of times a month, usually on a casino boat since we don't have casinos in my state. That means I have a finite time to play. I use your speed count and OBS card (Beat Blackjack Now: The Easiest Way to Get the Edge!). My question is this: When I'm at the table and novice players show up (they seem to travel in pairs) and start making non-basic strategy plays, do they hurt my odds of winning? If they are to my right I often sit out until they lose all their money or move on, but playing time is precious on a boat. Am I being a snob? Abe Dear Abe: You aren't being a snob but you are being misled by one of the persistent myths of blackjack that the way others play their hands directly affects you...read more

More on slot machine malfunctions

12 December 2010
[You wrote,] "I don't like the implications of your calling the disclaimer "the weasel clause." It gives the impression that casinos routinely deny players jackpots by invoking the disclaimer." Well, I did say "occasionally" [in the original letter]...read more
