Timeless Proverbs for Gamblers

18 February 2012
Proverbs have been around for a very long time and are used all around the world by different cultures and are generally based on the culture's experiences and histories. The dictionary tells us a proverb, from the Latin proverbium, is a "simple and concrete saying popularly known and repeated." While the context and language may differ from place to place, all proverbs are characterized by the fact that they have been passed down through generations to express a simple truth, usually based on common sense or practical experience...read more

How to play and win playing bonus poker

17 February 2012
Before I review the video poker game known as Bonus Poker, let me first briefly summarize the characteristics of a Jacks-or-Better game, since the two games are similar. The following characterize a Jacks-or-Better game: If you get a high pair (jacks through aces) you get your money back (meaning if you bet five coins and get a high pair, you win five coins). If you get two pair, you win double your money back (meaning if you bet five coins, you win ten coins). All four-of-a-kind winning hands are paid the same amount (usually 25 for 1), meaning it doesn't make any difference whether you have four aces or four deuces; they all are paid the same. The popular Bonus Poker video poker game has characteristics as 1 and 2 above, namely, you are paid even money for a high pair, and 2 for 1 for two pair...read more

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

16 February 2012
Q. As a video poker player, I live for the hands that really make a difference. I guess that's not unusual. Royal flushes are exciting, and if I don't get a royal then a few big four of a kinds can make my day. If I'm not getting four of a kind, then I'm not making any money. My question is this: Can you do anything in strategy to make the big hands come up more often, or do the games just pay out a certain number of the royals and four of a kinds? A...read more

Ask the Slot Expert: Number of coins played can affect long-term payback

15 February 2012
Hi John. Here's a question that I would like answered in your fine column. I believe that slots are programmed for their various payouts. I know you say that the RNG is the determining factor, but could you explain to me -- if a slot's payout is, let's say, 85 percent, is that based on max coins in or min coins in? It's got to make a difference, in which case the machine has to know the total it takes in...read more

Slot games may have different paybacks in different casinos

14 February 2012
There's a large subset of my e-mail that comes from slot players who start by saying, "I get that the games are random, but —" Then they tell of a slot experience that doesn't seem quite right to them. The latest came from a reader named Barb, who said she played the same games at different casinos. "I love those Hangover slots," she wrote, "but when I play at one casino, I win pretty good, and at the other I NEVER win...read more

The 12 superstitions about craps: #11 - Chip counting adds up to seven

13 February 2012
The 12 most popular superstitions at the game of craps are adhered to or believed by most craps players -- so if you want to play the game and not be thought a craps barbarian, you should know them. Keep in mind that individuals add their own superstitions too so you might hear someone yelling some incoherent thing at the table which to him will ward off the coming of the ominous 7 or bring it on if he is a Darkside player. Counting your chips while a shooter is rolling will bring on the seven...read more

Some of the more common game types include Jacks or Better, Bonus Poker, Double Bonus Poker, Double Double Bonus Poker, and Deuces Wild. To further classify these games, an indication of the payback is given...read more

Searching for Patterns

10 February 2012
I recently read a research article that discussed how our brains are programmed to search for patterns from any information that they receive. Of course this is hardly news to anyone who has taken an ink blot test or stared at the sky and saw sailing ships or other objects in the cloud formations...read more

A shuffle through the gaming mailbag

9 February 2012
Q. My wife and her girlfriend play at the same casino. The girlfriend plays strictly 2-cent slots while my wife plays about 80% 2-cent slots and 20% dollar slots. This year my wife earned about 40,000 base points; her girlfriend earned just over 11,000 base points...read more
