Deal Me In: Casinos are in the math-and-time business

30 November 2012
Dear Mark: What is the typical hold for the casino in blackjack? I have heard it is under 10 percent. Nathan M.I am wondering, Nathan, if you might be confusing the "house edge" with the "casino hold." The "house edge" in blackjack can be near zero against those who use perfect basic strategy, and approximately 5 percent against your typical player. The "hold" percentage is the ratio of chips the casino keeps to the total amount of chips sold, generally measured from as little as an eight-hour shift, to weekly, monthly, even yearly. For example, if a blackjack table sold $20,000 in chips and dropped the currency in the box over an eight-hour swing shift, and the table ended up keeping $9,000 of those chips (players cashing in the other $11,000), then that particular table game would have a "hold" of 45 percent for that defined game and period.Month to month, the hold can vary widely between games, casinos and gaming jurisdictions...read more

Exciting new casino table games

29 November 2012
When game developers create new table games, the first look usually is at poker. Poker-based games usually are easy to learn and easy to deal, and have proven to attract players with success such as three-card poker, Caribbean Stud and Texas Hold’em Bonus Poker. So it was no surprise at October’s Global Gaming Expo in Las Vegas that new table games had a heavy poker lean...read more

Ask the Slot Expert: How do slots in New York's racinos work?

28 November 2012
Hello John, I enjoy reading your articles and like your practical advice in the casinos. You give worthwhile advice. My question is regarding New York racinos and how their machines work since I am planning on visiting New York. Is it correct to say that the racino machines are Central Determination? Meaning are the machines a video representation of an electronic "scratch ticket" with pre-determined number of winners and losers since they are operated by the NY lottery? I have heard that the video poker machines also operate on this system as "bad choices" do not affect results because the machine has already drawn a winning or losing scratch ticket...read more

Cold and bloodless games

28 November 2012
I like looking at and interacting with the dealers when I play.In blackjack, I enjoy seeing their ring-covered fingers swiftly shuffling, then cutting, then dealing the cards. I like how fast they can add up everyone’s hands. I also enjoy the conversations with them.I love watching how fast veteran craps dealers can pay off a multitude of bets at a fast-action table with 12 to 14 players...read more

Video Poker Playing Speed

27 November 2012
Jerry, My playing partner has a theory that the speed of play on VP affects the RNG results for draw hands. He says if I play slower, my chances of winning or hitting a RF will be better. I say it is what it is, and that timing has little to do with the outcome of each hand. Thanks, Sandy Dear Sandy, Both your playing partner and you are at least partially correct...read more

Technology is changing fast, and if you don't keep up, someday your kids might find your struggles with the latest gadgets as amusing as my brothers and I used to find our parents' constant battle with the clock on the VCR.Today, many people walk around with small computers in their pockets (which also can be used to make phone calls), and they have Star Trek-style tablet computers in their homes...read more

Casino Customer Service Hell

24 November 2012
I recently read a column in Inc. Magazine titled “The 9 Circles of Customer Service Hell” and, to my delight, some of the information looked very familiar. It pointed out service and customer service training problems I have been counseling casinos on for nearly 20 years. It’s wonderful to have your expertise validated by another expert, even if it is a coincidence...read more
