Secrets and No Secrets of Video Poker

28 September 2013
Hi Jerry,Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to you to say thank you. I have been so busy.I have other questions: If the secrets are in your book, then you don't have to tell me - I mean I will buy your book. If you don't cover these questions in your book, would you be able to fill me in on the trick/s (if there even are any). How do you recognize when a jacks or better machine is hot? Do you notice when someone puts a crap load of money into the machine then loses it all, then you run to that machine and play? Are there a certain number of hands you play when you start, then bail out if it's not paying? When do you know to keep playing on a certain machine? Do you watch what hands a player is being dealt and if it's dealing crap, you avoid that machine? Are there any other things you watch for or do that make you play on a certain machine? When do you continue or bail from a machine when you're playing? Are there a certain number of days between hot and cold cycles of machines? These are a lot of questions but they will give you something to think about too...read more

Is there really a way to win?

26 September 2013
Two questions on different games arrived in my e-mail box one mid-August day, linked by a common theme: “Is this really a way to win?” A slot player and a craps player had been told of ways to beat the house edge, and each wanted to know if it was really true.Let’s take the slot question first...read more

Ask the Slot Expert: Should I use a different strategy in a video poker tournament?

25 September 2013
Love your stuff... don't ever stop! I travel to Las Vegas 4-5 times per year, normally to participate in Double Double Bonus (DDB) Video Poker tournaments. These are on an invitational basis, with no entry fee, and have nice prizes, starting with $25K first prize and going down to $100...read more

Winning on Fire Bet but losing on Match the Dealer

24 September 2013
FROM JASON: I recently went to my local casino to play craps and I was playing on a table that offers the fire bet. I only had $10 left and $5 was for the pass line bet and I did want to bet that fire bet for $5 but I didn't do it. I had a gentleman next to me on stick right say “Hey, if you hit all six points to win that fire bet I'll give you a hundred dollars." So I said all right that sounds good.I'm sure glad I didn't roll a crap on my first throw of the dice and I had hit a 6 for my point...read more

Keno machines and randomness

22 September 2013
QUESTION: Does a keno machine contain a random number generator chip, or does the chip contain specific sets of numbers which have been predetermined and programmed into the chip and will be displayed, albeit even randomly, each time a customer presses the “lay” button? It does not appear to me that if the chip in the machine could be truly a random number generator...read more

Understanding the games

21 September 2013
On a recent trip to Las Vegas I was quite surprised with the number of players I saw at the blackjack tables where the house was paying only 6 to 5 for a blackjack. I heard some players say “It's only single deck, so it must be a good game.”However, you should know that the house advantage with this rule goes from a small percent (less than 1 percent) for the normal single-deck game to almost one and a half percent. Here is the math: the traditional 3-2 payout for a blackjack will get the player $7.50 for a $5 bet...read more

Deal Me In: Awaiting word from Mount Nebo

20 September 2013
Dear Mark: A couple of thoughts from this avid fan of your weekly gaming advice column related to the Q&A about what do to with a pair of sixes against a dealer's deuce in a blackjack game.First, I am amazed that there are literally scores of blackjack cards (you state you're in possession of 40)...read more

The facts about slot makers

19 September 2013
Every slot manufacturer has its own way of going about game design. They’re influenced by each other, of course, and are quick to adapt successful innovations, but they want to put their own stamp on the games, too.Take community-style slot machines, with shared bonus events...read more

Ask the Slot Expert: Are fewer slot players hitting jackpots today?

18 September 2013
John, I greatly enjoy your column. I go to Vegas maybe once a year, learned to be a session gambler, and collect Silver Strike coins (Sam's Town, 4 Queens, and some others still have them). Like John who wrote you on your 14 November 2012 column (Are slots tighter today?), I miss the good old days, although I am too frugal for the casinos to offer me a lot, and I tend to visit many casinos in one day, enjoying the variety versus sitting at a table/machine for hours. I notice that the penny machines have brought a sea change in wagering, where casino players win $500 and $1000 jackpots versus the old days where you would see the casinos promoting the big $30,000, $50,000, etc...read more

How much to tip slot attendants and when to parley bets

17 September 2013
FROM VINNY: In April of this year my wife hit a major jackpot on the U-SPIN slot machine. She won $9,500. She gave the attendant $100 as a tip. Is there a certain percentage that you should tip an attendant based on the amount you win on a slot machine or is it at the discretion of the player?FRANK’S RESPONSE: Any tip is up to the discretion of the slot player – in fact, you do not have to tip at all unless the slot attendant has given you some good service...read more
