The lucky one

19 January 2016
Have you been a lucky player? When you went to the casinos did you usually win? Are people envious of you because they think Dame Fortune favors you?Or have you been an unlucky player? Do people sympathize with you when they hear of the rotten times you’ve had in gambling? Have you at times thought of yourself as Lady Luck’s whipping boy (or girl)?Or have you been just so-so when it came to luck? You won some, you lost some? Here is the shocking news: There is no such thing as “luck.” It is just a term we use to describe random results as they apply to people, places and things...read more

Taking even money at 6-5 blackjack

17 January 2016
QUESTION: I hate to beat a dead horse on “even money,” but here goes.I play on a lot on cruise ships and many, if not most, are going to 6-5 blackjack on tables under $25. In that case would taking even money be the better bet? I get it that the 6-5 game has a high vig and should be avoided, but if you don't have adequate bank to play a greenie a hand (or just don't want to risk that much) it is pretty good entertainment. The other problem I see with the 6-5 is when the casino puts the minimum bet at $6 and don't pay the extra quarter to bring it up to a true 6-5 on blackjack payoff...read more

New Year's resolutions

14 January 2016
As I sat down to write two days after Christmas, my wife Marcy stopped me with a question.“Which one is top of the list?”I wasn’t sure what she was talking about, and I needed context: Which what, and what list?“Resolution,” she replied. “That’s what you’re writing, isn’t it? It’s that time of year.”Indeed it is...read more

13 January 2016
You stated on Dec. 30, 2015 in response to a question about smaller bets paying off more often than max bets that it was all random. I think I have to beg to differ. While we can both agree that the RNG dictates when a winning spin will be generated, it canNOT be all random...read more

Why casinos allow empty $100 tables

12 January 2016
FROM RONALD J: I have a question. When we go to a casino, and normally we find this in Vegas and not as much on the riverboat casinos in our area, we will see the five-dollar tables filled while the dealer stands with no players at a hundred-dollar table...read more

In May of 2005, the late Sammy Vaughn made history when he won a lump sum of one million dollars in the first ever million-dollar blackjack tournament (at the Las Vegas Hilton).
