Ameristar Casinos Raises Q3 Earnings Estimates

LAS VEGAS -- Las Vegas-based Ameristar Casinos on Thursday upgraded its expected financial performance for the third quarter, a sign to gaming analysts that the sector could be reporting good news as quarterly earnings are rolled out later this month. Ameristar, which operates regional casinos in Northern Nevada, Colorado, Missouri, Iowa and Mississippi, told analysts and investors that its earnings per share for the quarter ended Saturday would be about 7 cents to 8 cents higher than previously predicted. Ameristar said the higher earnings also reflected reductions in estimated depreciation expenses, to $24 million from $25 million, and in interest expense, to $12 million from $12.5 million. Internet Gambling Debate: Who Speaks for You?

Focus on the Family is calling Congress' vote to pass the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act last week the "vote heard round the world." "Families are celebrating as Congress heard their voices, the voices of millions of families to stop Internet gambling," says Chad Hills, Analyst for Gambling Research for Focus on the Family. A study commissioned by the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) and conducted by independent market research supplier ICR earlier this year, however, indicates that Congress actually moved against the majority opinion on the matter. Seventy-four percent of those surveyed responded "No" to the question: "Should the federal government prevent Americans from playing poker on the Internet?" Hills, however, took issue with the survey, stating that the question was unfairly skewed to produce a negative response to legislation.
