Adelson offers conflicting testimony22 April 2008
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Las Vegas Sands Chairman and CEO Sheldon Adelson offered conflicting testimony Friday about whether he or a top executive of his company breached fiduciary responsibilities and offered to pay a Hong Kong businessman to find investors and help obtain a casino license in Macau.
During contentious questioning before the lunch break Richard Suen's attorney, John O'Malley, asked Adelson whether or not Las Vegas Sands President Bill Weidner wanted Suen to find investors for what was then a proposed hotel-casino development in Macau.
Adelson, 74, who in 2001 was suffering severe pain from a rare neurological disorder, told O'Malley that Weidner should not have asked someone with Suen's lack of financial experience to find investors for the project.

LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Las Vegas Sands Corp. Chairman Sheldon Adelson said Thursday he didn't believe a Hong Kong businessman could help his casino company win a gaming concession in Macau because, at the time, there wasn't any opportunity for casino expansion in the Chinese special administrative region.
Still, Adelson said, he and Las Vegas Sands President Bill Weidner traveled to Beijing in 2001 to meet with Chinese government officials under the belief "that you never leave any stone unturned."

Share prices for major casino companies drop16 April 2008 NEW YORK AND LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Share prices of the major casino operators tumbled Tuesday, the day after MGM Mirage said it eliminated 440 manager and supervisory level positions at both property and corporate levels.
It was unclear Tuesday if other casino operators were laying off workers as a response to the souring national and local economies.
Gaming revenues statewide and on the Strip have fallen in three of the past four months while room rates are down as much as 19 percent from a year ago.
