Playing It Smart: Veering away from "the book"

21 September 2009
Playing blackjack "by the book" minimizes house advantage or edge in the game. Analysts say Penn deal for Fontainebleau 'unlikely'

18 September 2009
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Analysts were quick to shoot down a Wall Street Journal report this morning that Penn National Gaming was close to buying the bankrupt Fontainebleau project, which shut down construction earlier this year. While Penn National has openly said it was seeking to acquire a Strip resort — the company has more than $1.5 billion in cash thanks to an aborted takeover attempt last year — analysts doubt the $3 billion, 4,000-room Fonrtainebleau was the target. "Penn has done some work looking at Fontainebleau, much as it has looked at many property acquisition candidates over the last year," JPMorgan gaming analyst Joe Greff told investors...read more

Caesars dealers march on Strip

18 September 2009
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- It's been roughly 21 months since dealers at Caesars Palace overwhelmingly voted in favor of union representation. But the dealers and Caesars' parent Harrah's Entertainment have been unable to reach a contract agreement. Dealers and other members of the Transport Workers Union Local 721 took their frustration to the Strip sidewalk in front of the famed hotel-casino Thursday to call attention to the lack of progress in the negotiations. Wearing red shirts, about 600 dealers and supporters of the Transport Workers, who were holding their annual convention in Las Vegas, marched from Flamingo Road to the hotel's driveway in the afternoon heat. "All we're trying to do is get their attention," said Ernie Acevedo, a Caesars Palace dealer for 17 years and secretary-treasurer of Local 721...read more
