How pretty are blackjack players sitting with totals of 20 or 21?

9 November 2009
Most blackjack buffs believe they're in the catbird seat with totals of 20 or 21. Yes, these hands can lose to blackjacks. But solid citizens learn this particular bad news before the round starts to be played out. So, if the dealer shows a 10 or ace and the hole card check proves benign, or the upcard is anything from two through nine, the payoff is practically headed to the bank. Right? Maybe...read more

Instant final table analysis: Cada, Moon somehow outlast the rest

8 November 2009
LAS VEGAS -- The best way to look at Saturday's action at the World Series of Poker Main Event final table is that Darvin Moon finished with 58.8 million chips, essentially the same amount that he started with. And Joe Cada took everyone else's chips and now has 135.9 million chips. Saturday's action – which spilled into Sunday morning and didn't end until 5:55 Vegas time -- had an odd ebb and flow...read more

Ivey's media snub after Main Event exit was not "the best thing for poker"

8 November 2009
LAS VEGAS – Throughout the four-month delay before the World Series of Poker Main Event final table, there was a lot of debate about what player winning would be "best for poker." Most observers felt that a Phil Ivey victory was the answer to that question since it would be ideal if "the greatest player in the world won the greatest tournament in the world." Those exact words almost became a cliché among the many talking heads and podcast hosts in the poker media during the last three months. Well, for all of you out there who were of this mindset, it turns out that while you may have been correct, it didn't matter...read more

Deal Me In: Michigan gamblers out of luck on info

6 November 2009
Dear Mark: Is it my imagination, or have the casinos in Detroit tightened up the percentages won by them? Before building the new casinos, my husband and I seemed to have more luck than we do in their newer ones. Not only that, but they didn't bring over some of our favorite quarter machines...read more

Vote paves way for Vegas-style casinos in Ohio

5 November 2009
LAS VEGAS, Nevada -- Ohio voters Tuesday said they want to see four Las Vegas-style casinos built in the Buckeye State, but residents are still a long way from the first slot machine pull. Investors in Penn National Gaming and Nevada's slot machines makers, however, are already stacking their chips. Tuesday night's vote in Ohio reversed two decades of opposition to gambling in a state where residents rejected casino measures on four different occasions. However, with the state facing a budget deficit and 10 percent unemployment, Ohio voters approved a referendum by a 53 percent to 47 percent margin that will allow one casino in each of the state's four largest cities...read more
