Actor Kevin Pollak still alive at main event of World Series of Poker

10 July 2012
Kevin Pollak was planning to spend time at the World Series of Poker hanging around the Rio's convention area to promote the relaunch of HollywoodPoker.com, a free-to-play social gaming website where players can interact with celebrities. He's accomplishing that task from the tables.Pollak, star of such movies as "Casino," "The Usual Suspects" and "A Few Good Men," survived Saturday's opening round at the $10,000 buy-in No Limit Hold'em World Championship and will play again today. However, his good fortune may not last.Out of the 657 players who survived from Saturday's starting field of 1,066, Pollak sits in 305th place with 43,900 in tournament chips, some 222,800 chips behind the leader."Obviously I'm going to need to double-up right away so I can avoid getting short stacked," Pollak said.Clearly, he didn't imagine himself in this position, although he was pleased he lasted longer in the tournament than other celebrities, including actor Ray Romano, who was eliminated Saturday."Other than acting opposite Robert De Niro, this was the most sphincter-tightening situation that I've ever been in," Pollak said...read more

Sun may shine on some regional gaming companies

10 July 2012
Moody's Investors Service gave the regional gaming community a smackdown last month. Casinos in several markets, such as the Northeast and central United States, were said to be having difficulties financially, brought about by oversupply and diminished gaming revenue figures. Poker player Esfandiari poised to pounce

9 July 2012
Strange is it sounds, winning a record poker jackpot of $18.3 million might seem like chicken feed over the next few years for Antonio Esfandiari.Brian Balsbaugh, the CEO of Poker Royalty, the Las Vegas-based firm that manages the careers of poker players, said Esfandiari's victory in the World Series of Poker's $1 million buy-in "Big One for One Drop" event last week at the Rio "catapults him into the stratosphere of poker celebrity."Thanks to victories on the televised World Poker Tour and a stint behind the microphone as a television color commentator for ESPN's World Series of Poker Main Event coverage last year, Esfandiari was already a high-profile poker commodity. That recognition rose even higher when he topped a field of 48 players and a final table that included 12-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth Jr., 2011 Poker Players Championship winner Brian Rast, Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte and MGM Resorts International executive Bobby Baldwin - winner of the 1978 World Series of Poker. Now, Esfandiari, 33, can cash in outside the poker room."Antonio was already one of the game's most recognizable A-list players," Balsbaugh said...read more
