Top-10 ways to spend your Full Tilt money

3 March 2014
Last Friday, after waiting almost three years, more than 27,500 Americans logged in to their banks to see their Full Tilt Poker balances had been deposited by the Garden City Group into their accounts. While some folks are still waiting (people who disputed their balance, or have trickier issues such as affiliate payments mixed in to their player accounts), approximately $76 million has been returned to American poker players, representing a huge influx of money into the poker economy. For many people, this is kind of like "found money." Ever find a $20 bill in the pocket of a pair of pants you hadn't worn in a long time? It's a pretty sweet feeling, and a lot of times, you end up splurging a bit with that money in a way that you might not have otherwise...read more

Inside Gaming: Sunshine State brings shrugs from Las Vegas casino interests

3 March 2014
LAS VEGAS -- Florida is back in play, but no one really seems to care.Last month, legislation was unveiled that could bring Las Vegas-style casinos to South Florida — one each for Miami-Dade and Broward counties. Local voters in both communities would have to approve the resorts through referendums. The legislation would allow racetracks outside current South Florida racinos to add slot machines and would create a five-member Gaming Control Board. Most believe the ideas will die a quick death. The proposals are Florida’s first tangible casino expansion effort since 2012...read more

Deal Me In: A combo of different wagers won't help against the house edge

28 February 2014
Dear Mark: Is there a way of combining multiple wagers on a roulette table to maximize one's odds and increase my chances of winning? For instance, a column bet pays off at 2 to 1. If I place the second and third column, I have a 66.6% chance of winning, just so long as the 0/00 don’t appear...read more

Poker Player Tweets of the Week: Green Friday edition

28 February 2014
The day has finally arrived. On Friday, nearly three years after Black Friday, when the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) shut down Full Tilt and seized players' bankrolls from the website, several players finally got back their money. It's a day that will go down in poker history, and many in the industry have dubbed it "Green Friday." (Why does this stuff keep happening on Fridays, anyway?) In place of my usual Tweets of the Week column, I've decided to join in the celebration by compiling tweets that have captured the emotion of this great day...read more

28 February 2014
LAS VEGAS -- A legislative committee tasked with looking at technology’s effect on the casino industry launched a debate Thursday on whether Nevada’s more than 2,000 restricted gaming locations rely too heavily on slot machines as a revenue source. The issue — whether funds gleaned from gaming in bars, taverns, restaurants and other businesses with 15 or fewer slot machines incidental to the location’s overall revenue stream — has been argued over the past few years by lawmakers, gaming regulators, the casino industry, restricted licensees and others.Various changes have been made to state and local ordinances, regulations and statutes. On Thursday, the Committee to Conduct an Interim Study Concerning the Impact of Technology Upon Gaming, which is comprised of legislators, regulators and gaming industry representatives, was told to leave well enough alone.“It’s been governed and it’s been regulated,” said Las Vegas attorney John O’Reilly, representing several tavern operators and their trade association...read more
