11 July 2016
LAS VEGAS -- The start of the largest single-day field in World Series of Poker Main Event history was highlighted by the appearance of two of the game’s most enigmatic players: Phil Ivey and Joe McKeehen. For McKeehen, who has been here all summer and is once again running hot, the story wasn't his presence at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for Main Event Day 1C, but what he had to say...read more

Mike Sexton's "Life's a Gamble" is a light tour through old-school poker

11 July 2016
Front cover of new memoir from Mike Sexton Mike Sexton's new memoir, Life's a Gamble, officially went on sale July 7, but it's been available at the World Series of Poker for a couple of weeks. Casino City was lucky to receive a review copy shortly before the Independence Day long weekend, which meant I was able to indulge in a very American holiday of reading poker and golf stories in between naps in the sun while drinking beer and being sat on by dogs.I mention this because I think it was a good way to read this book, and I advise that if you read it, you find a similar sort of situation to do it in — perhaps by a casino poolside, if you can get to one...read more

Ex-NFL stars use WSOP Main Event to keep competitive juices flowing

9 July 2016
LAS VEGAS -- For 15 seasons, Antoine Winfield made a pretty darn good living because of his quickness, playing a game that was all about speed. Not surprisingly, when the ex-NFL defensive back started to take poker more seriously upon retiring from football three years ago, he needed something to fill the void of all the dead time there is when competing in a tournament.Former Minnesota Viking Antoine Winfield kills time in between hands at the WSOP by playing online chess with Adrian Peterson...read more

Jason Mercier in hot pursuit of one more WSOP bracelet

5 July 2016
Jason Mercier has already done a career's worth of damage during this year's World Series of Poker, winning a pair of bracelets while making it to four final tables and cashing in 10 events. But he is far from satisfied. With the number of events remaining dwindling toward single digits and the Main Event set to begin on Saturday, the 29-year-old Florida native is hell-bent on becoming just the seventh person in history to win three bracelets in a single WSOP...read more

Top 10 players we'd like to see at this year's WSOP Main Event final table

5 July 2016
One year ago, Joe McKeehen was not a household name in the world of poker. Same goes for Martin Jacobson the year before, Ryan Riess in 2013 and Greg Merson in 2012.Today, of course, all of the above names are forever part of poker history after winning a World Series of Poker Main Event, instantly going from an unknown to someone whose face will be plastered on a banner inside the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino for as long as the WSOP is held there. My point? The WSOP Main Event is rarely a tournament in which a "big name" prevails — particularly over the last 11 years, when it started drawing fields with a minimum of 5,619 players (2005) and maximum of 8,773 (2006)...read more

Top 10 observations from joining a women's poker group

27 June 2016
Somewhere around New Year's resolutions-making time, I decided that one of my projects for 2016 would be to start playing poker. It's difficult to properly edit poker content without a good grasp of the game, so this project is definitely for serious career development reasons and not at all because I am a big nerd who loves tabletop games.I've tried to cajole my friends into playing with me, but it's been difficult to get games going with any sort of regularity, as most of my friends are pretty busy with their existing gaming schedules...read more
