Dan's DFS picks: Divisional round

14 January 2016
I swear, if it weren't for two ridiculous plays in last week's Wild-Card playoff round, I would have won the Millionaire Maker on DraftKings. My lineup was good enough to cash for $35 – my fourth straight week with a cash – but I'm sure I would have hit at least a four-figure score if Kam Chancellor hadn't illegally contacted Jerick McKinnon before he dropped a surefire touchdown pass, and if DeSean Jackson didn't step out of bounds instead of over the goal line for a touchdown.Coulda, woulda, shoulda...read more

10 key moments in the evolution of PokerStars

11 January 2016
Late last year, when Amaya announced it would be changing PokerStars.com's loyalty program, it became the target of wrath for thousands of its highest-volume players. 7 January 2016
Daily fantasy sports was in the headlines again on Wednesday — but this time, for a change, the news was positive for operators.California not only became the first state to pass a DFS regulation bill out of a committee hearing, but it did so in a landslide when the Internet Fantasy Sports Game Protection Act (AB 1437), which seeks to create a regulatory and licensing framework for DFS websites, was approved by the Assembly Governmental Organization Committee by a resounding 18-1 margin.Assemblymember Adam C...read more

New York Attorney General goes after FanDuel, DraftKings -- again

4 January 2016
A turbulent year for the daily fantasy sports industry ended with another unexpected development last week when New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman filed an amended lawsuit on New Year's Eve, asking FanDuel and DraftKings to repay all of the money it has generated from the state – an estimated $200 million – and pay a fine of up to $5,000 per case. The news hit three weeks after a New York Supreme Court judge granted Schneiderman's preliminary injunction against DFS operators, saying they are "illegal gambling operations" that "subject the public to fraudulent perceptions." Subsequently, FanDuel and DraftKings won a temporary reprieve from the order to stop doing business in the state and have remained operational."It's definitely surprising," said Jeff Ifrah, who specializes in iGaming law and is a founding partner of Ifrah Law in Washington, D.C...read more

Inside Gaming: Kentucky judge levels 'egregious' penalty against PokerStars

30 December 2015
We know Kentucky has problems filling its budget gaps, but a state judge's Christmas Eve gift was a little extreme. In essence, Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate is forcing owners of an online gaming company to pay penalties of $870 million, which could help bail out the financially troubled commonwealth.Heck, you could buy all of Kentucky for that amount.Maybe the judge had few mint juleps at the court's holiday party.Wingate, ruling on a case that had been languishing since 2010 and relying on a centuries-old law that allows individuals with gambling losses to sue their opponents, said Amaya Inc...read more
