When It Goes Wrong

21 March 2024

CINDY: We have written a lot of articles on the right ways to play various games in order to keep the house edge as low as you can get it. But there is one thing I don’t think we have stressed enough.

ABBY: Uh, oh.

CINDY: Seriously. Even with the best strategies. Even if you are a plain old good player with excellent strategies, you can take a whooping. That must be understood before you play any casino game.

ABBY: When a game is random the streaks can come your way and things will be great or the streaks can go the other way. This can happen to any player in any game; it is the way of things.

CINDY: You can also go in and out, up and down, a little at a time, this way and that way, and still find yourself losing by the end of it all. Bad sessions are par for the course in casino playing. We have to be aware of that and be able to handle them or you will drive yourself crazy.

ABBY: Even athletes know that it is hard to be undefeated and losses are inevitable. Casino players should know this too.

CINDY: You want to have fun playing the games.

ABBY: And the games can be fun.

CINDY: But you have to be level-headed too. You can’t be living in a dreamworld where everything will meet your fantasy of constant wins.

ABBY: Or constant large wins.

CINDY: I think that is the biggest fantasy of all in the casino-playing world – that a large win surely awaits you.

ABBY: I think slot players hone into that fantasy and that fantasy could be true to a slot player here or there of the tens of millions of slot players who are out there. But in the world of table games, you’d have to be a big bettor to even conceive of monster-level wins. You aren’t going to win a million dollars if you are a five-dollar player at blackjack. At least, I have never heard of that.

CINDY: Neither have I.

ABBY: I think being a level-headed player, you know when it is time to leave a session and take a break, especially when the good luck you wished you were going to have just isn’t there anymore or wasn’t there at all. You can always come back at another time to pick up play. I prefer not to go down the tubes in a great way. That is demoralizing to me.

CINDY: I agree. So, while losing is inevitable at times, and every player should know this, the bad must be handled without it crushing you. That is an important lesson in playing at the casinos.

ABBY: I strongly believe in having a bank account for your playing money and only use that money. You can make it an account where you put some money in regularly so you will never have to worry about taking such a beating that it will ruin your real life.

CINDY: Or your reel life! By the way your player’s bank account should be interest bearing so you are making money when that account exists. Makes sense to me.

ABBY: I think all casino players must be aware of the good and the bad. That just makes sense to me too.
