Wear Your Masks8 August 2020
ABBY: The hustling and jostling is largely over from what we have experienced. But one thing is really bugging us. There are too many players who don’t wear masks. Yes, they are told to and they will put the mask on when told to but when they leave the table they take the masks off their faces. That is not right. CINDY: I find that disturbing because the masks are there to protect us and to protect them. Someone who has the virus can spread it he or she is not wearing protection. ABBY: It’s common courtesy. CINDY: I know some people think this is some kind of government conspiracy but it is a simple request. I think of it like a parking meter. You park here and you put some coins in the meter. No one wants to do that but we do. ABBY: I think sometimes alcohol influences how people react to this mask thing. Some players think they are invulnerable after a few nips and they behave in the wrong fashion. CINDY: They aren’t Superman or Thor. ABBY: I love Thor! CINDY: Maybe superheroes can get away from the virus because of their powers but those of us who are mortal don’t have that ability. ABBY: The casino experience is supposed to be fun, a getaway from real life. It’s another world. And that is how it should be. Because of the virus most of our worlds have been changed, sometimes drastically, and going back to the casino is something we can look forward to. I want to savor the enjoyment as much as I can. I don’t want someone who doesn’t wear a mask to remind me that if he is positive for the virus and doesn’t know it that he can give it to me or Cindy. That certainly takes away the charm of the casino. CINDY: I have found that I’ve enjoyed the blackjack games. The social distancing is done with Plexiglass and it seems to work out okay. I haven’t played any slots or video poker yet. I know they are wiped down but I am a little nervous touching metal. I know that colds can be picked up from metal and I wonder if this virus can too. ABBY: Right now craps seems a little strange. I am going to have to get used to it because craps is, let me admit this honestly, my absolute favorite game. I am playing it but that crowd camaraderie is not there to its fullest yet. It’s kind of like we have all stepped onto an island where there is a craps game but it is not exactly what we are used to. CINDY: I think the dealers are happy to be back. We know many of them from the amount of time we have spent playing in our favorite casinos. Having a job is good and not having a job is horrible. Businesses such as casinos and restaurants and theaters have been closed and people who work those industries have been hurting. ABBY: I think we are tipping more money than ever before. CINDY: And we were good tippers anyway but the dealers are there all day and night and that must be a strain above and beyond their normal strain of working with the public. ABBY: That isn’t always easy. CINDY: But we are happy to be back! ABBY: Amen to that! This article is provided by the Frank Scoblete Network. Melissa A. Kaplan is the network's managing editor.
