ABBY: As most of you know, the game of craps is largely a man’s game, even now in the 21st century. For some reason women still shy away from it. CINDY: You will find slightly more women playing the game now then back when but the men still rule those tables. ABBY: I guess you can give a million reasons why but really what does it matter? I love the game and I wanted to play it, whether men dominated the game or not. CINDY: Women do not take the abuse they used to all those decades ago when men frowned if a woman appeared at the table to play. ABBY: Women could be at the table if they were girlfriends or wives but a woman coming to the table without a man was looked at with disdain. CINDY: Snarky comments could be heard and plenty of grumbles when Abby and I bought in and then even more grumbles when we shot the dice. If one of us sevened out early in our shooting some of the fellas thought we were doing this as a part of a conspiracy to make them lose money. It was just as it seems – ridiculous. ABBY: Cindy and I have somewhat tough skins and the grumbling didn’t really bother us much. CINDY: And to be fair most of the men were just fine with us at the table. Some of them didn’t even notice because they were so much into their own game against the casino. ABBY: But then there were those others. I remember one guy looking over at us when we were playing side by side. We had both just sevened-out early and cost everyone some money. His face screwed up with what looked like hate. He said…. CINDY: No, he screamed! ABBY: “Shouldn’t you two babes be playing the slots? Those are for the ladies. This is a game for men who know how to gamble.” Wowee! CINDY: A couple of other men “yeahed” him. ABBY: I just looked at him and said sarcastically that there was an almost empty table over there. I pointed to it. A man who is such an expert at gambling might want to play alone or almost alone. CINDY: The guy just glared. Then one young guy shouted at the man, “Why don’t you shut up? They can play if the want to play. You haven’t been doing so hot, you know.” ABBY: Right there and then I thought we were going to have a fight. Two men fighting over two women. But the older guy shut his trap and looked down at his chip rack. He didn’t bother us anymore and he left the table just before we got the dice. CINDY: I wish I could say we shot the lights out but our two rolls were terrible. ABBY: I thought I’d be funny so I said, “Anyone know any good slot machines?” CINDY: A couple of guys laughed, the rest just remained silent. The guy who scolded us was dumb. There aren’t as many of those dumb ones anymore. This article is provided by the Frank Scoblete Network. Melissa A. Kaplan is the network's managing editor.
