Slow Down30 December 2021
ABBY: Yes. "Slow down, you move too fast, you got to make the morning last." CINDY: Good. Now change the word “morning” to “money” and you have how casino players should use their bankrolls in the casinos. Very slowly. The faster a player plays, the more money that player will lose over time. ABBY: We know that taking your time playing the games will result in fewer losses over time. That is a truth that can’t be debated. Time equals money for the casino. CINDY: More and more time equals more and more money for the casino. ABBY: And less and less money for the player. CINDY: If you recall Martin Scorsese’s movie Casino, remember that Robert De Niro’s character explains that same idea at the beginning of the movie. That the longer a player plays the better chance the casino has to be ahead of that player. I think they got a high roller who had a great weekend to stay a few extra days and finally his “good-luck” time was up and he lost a lot in the end. ABBY: Every game benefits the casino if it is played fast. Mini-baccarat can be like lightning and can really hurt the player even though two of its three bets are low in terms of house edge. But playing maybe two hundred hands an hour can devastate a player’s bankroll. CINDY: If you play blackjack head-to-head with the dealer you are probably getting a hundred, or over a hundred hands, per hour. It is better to play at a full or almost full table to reduce the number of hands you play. You can have just as much fun playing fewer hands than playing more hands. ABBY: The math really works itself out over time. A player can get lucky now and again, that is true, but give the casino time and no player’s luck can really overcome the house edge. CINDY: Time can also be translated as number of bets one makes simultaneously. Take a look at craps and how many craps players make multiple bets at the game on almost every decision of the throw. The more bets a player makes, the more it is like time passing. Craps players have to rein themselves in when they play or they are asking for trouble. ABBY: Roulette is similar to craps in that many bets can be made at the same time. It is best to just make one or two. Here the proposition bets, which can be deadly at craps, are good at roulette. You get plenty of action but the cost can be much less. CINDY: Slot machines? Many players get into the habit of zooming through their slot play. That type of play causes them to play so many decisions that it is impossible to come out ahead for any length of time. ABBY: Slow and steady is the way to go at slots. CINDY: What about Frank Scoblete’s one coin or credit at a time and the heck with multiple credits? ABBY: I like it but I wonder how many slot players can resist the lure of full credits per decision. CINDY: I find that a hard idea. It violates all the rules slot players have come to follow. ABBY: Rules are meant to be broken sometimes. CINDY: Well, playing long hours and also many bets is a rule the casinos love. But not the players! ABBY: Agreed!
