CINDY: I am sure that most of you have heard the little “ditty” that “slow and steady wins the race.”

ABBY: When it comes to casino playing “slow and steady” might not win the race over any length of time – because the house has an edge over the players on almost any bet and almost all games. That is something to be aware of and to remind yourself of that when you go into a contest against the casinos.

CINDY: The few games that are susceptible to advantage play are closely watched. Actually, all games are closely watched.

ABBY: But that is not what this article is about. No, sir!

CINDY: You have a few drinks. You’re loose and enjoying your playing experience. What do most players do when they are, shall we say, warmed up? They tend to play faster and if they are losing some layers try to make up their losses by throwing their money at the game as if speed gives them an edge.

ABBY: Speed does not give players any edge whatsoever. In fact, the faster you go, the more likely the casino’s edges will catch up to you.

CINDY: Now, here is a happy thought. You do not have to play fast. You do not have to shovel your money onto the layout calling out your bets as if the faster you go the better you will be. The speed with which you play will have no determining factor in whether you win or not. Your expectation is to lose. A fatal phrase? Yes. But it doesn’t have to be the end all of your play.

ABBY: Our recommendation is to play slow and when you are feeling oh so good, what should you do?

CINDY: Try to play even slower!

ABBY: There is not one casino game whose speed you can’t reduce. Even mini-baccarat can be brought down somewhat. You just have to be in the correct mindset to understand that slow is good for you and fast is good for the casino.

CINDY: Too many players allow their inner selves to lose control. They think such a loss of control is good for their prospects. It isn’t. It is the worst of things.

ABBY: Now here is some more advice to put in your pocket…

CINDY: Or purse.

ABBY: Try to maintain a relaxed pace in every situation. Blackjack hands do not have to be played fast. Take your time before you make a decision about how you should play your hands. And play at full tables to reduce the total number of hands on which you wager. Go to the bathroom (if you have to go) not during the shuffle but when the game is active.

CINDY: Craps does not have to be played at an outrageous speed. And don’t make too many bets.

ABBY: There are plenty of games in the casino where a little relaxed thought will help you slow everything down. You do not have to let other players know what you are doing because most won’t actually care as they decide their own betting strategy.

CINDY: So go slow.

ABBY: Slow and steady will save you money over time.
