ABBY: Men played craps in the World War II aftermath. It was almost an exclusive male game. They would send their wives and girlfriends off to play the slots. And that is indeed where those women would go. CINDY: Blackjack had some women who played it but the males dominated that game too. ABBY: Maybe roulette had something of a 50-50 split between the sexes. CINDY: But slots were the province of women. Absolutely. ABBY: Women still outnumber the males at slot machines but it is a much closer contest between the two of them. Males have taken to the slots and especially to video poker where they dominate. CINDY: Okay. Is there a particular reason why women like slot machines more than table games? ABBY: Well, today we are well represented in table game play but craps is still a heavily dominant male world. CINDY: Men still get somewhat antsy when a lone woman who is not with another male comes to the table. I still find that. The younger guys seem far less antsy at the craps tables when a lone woman or two show up to play. That I notice. ABBY: We sure as shooting love craps. CINDY: And why do we? ABBY: It is a hands-on game, that’s for sure. The player takes the dice into his or her own hands and rolls them. Everything is determined by the player. There also seems to be a camaraderie among the players too. It can be like one long party if the shooters have been successful. Except of course for the darksiders. CINDY: The darksiders are those players who bet against the dice hitting any number but the 7. They tend to bring the table down and you will often hear the rightside players make comments about the few darksiders that come to the table. ABBY: The presence of one or two darksiders can disrupt the psychology of the other players. They seem to get somewhat uptight when the darksiders win. CINDY: A lot uptight. ABBY: Yes, a lot uptight. If a darkside player stands next to a rightsider at a table, the rightsider seems to get really, really uptight. Craps at times seems to be like a club and those who do not belong to the club, especially darksiders, are not welcome. Do you think some men feel that way about women? CINDY: In the good old days, maybe yes, but now not so much. Younger guys seem to have little problem with women craps players. But they do the same looks and so on that the older players do when a darksider enters the fray. ABBY: Take a look at roulette. There are few shared wins in the game if most players just bet one number or so. CINDY: True. ABBY: Most players do spread their bets around and so you will get some multiple hits. But you do not see the gung-ho energy as on a craps table. A weird as this sounds, roulette is a solitary game overall. Sometimes maybe some player makes a big hit and the other players may cheer for him or her…maybe. CINDY: At blackjack, if the dealer is busting a lot there might be a shared commonality among the players and you might hear some cheers. ABBY: What about cheers at slot machines? CINDY: A big win? Maybe. Otherwise it is more a solitary game; you and your machine. This article is provided by the Frank Scoblete Network. Melissa A. Kaplan is the network's managing editor.
