Oops!

23 December 2021

CINDY: The title of this article could be “mistakes I have made.”

ABBY: Aside from your first marriage…

CINDY: My only marriage…

ABBY: Oops.

CINDY: Now, we have both had great sessions and trips to the casinos. You can play for a couple of decades…

ABBY: A couple?

CINDY: Let’s not go into time, please.

ABBY: Fine with me.

CINDY: But there have been times when we have blown it either through stupidity or just awful luck that continued for a long, long time.

ABBY: I am under the firm belief that no matter how good a casino player someone is, that seeking perfection from that person is a lost cause. Part of being human is making mistakes; maybe bad mistakes of judgment or just forgetting to do something you always do. Maybe getting lost in your thoughts and forgetting you are actually playing a game.

CINDY: When I was going through my divorce, I forgot what bets I had at the craps table. I mean I only make a “line” bet and maybe one or two Come bets. I was in a fog. The guy next to me told me to collect my win. I didn’t even know what number was hit. It was as if I wasn’t playing the game. I don’t exactly know what I was thinking but I wasn’t thinking about the game. Even the dealer said, “Ma’am, collect your win.”

ABBY: At blackjack I once hit on a 17. I thought it was a 16. How could I just add something so simple and miss what it actually came to. Everyone at the table jumped on me to tell me I was screwing up. I said, “You always hit 16 against a dealer’s 10 up.” The dealer just gave me the hit. He didn’t really care that I was screwing up. The table then yelled at him. I was so embarrassed.

CINDY: You know I am not much of a drinker. Two glasses of wine and that’s it at dinner. But this one night I wanted a drink while I was playing mini-baccarat. How could this hurt me? The game is like flipping a coin. Bet Banker or bet Player. That’s the game. Two bets. I had another drink. I was a little tipsy I’ll admit. Then a funny guy at the table said he’d treat all of us for a drink. He really meant he’d tip the waitress because the drinks were free.

ABBY: I wish I had seen that!

CINDY: I wished I hadn’t because – now don’t yell at me for this – I realized that the Tie bet hadn’t hit in a while and so…

ABBY: Oh, no, you didn’t?

CINDY: I bet it. The dopey bet had a 14 percent house edge and I stupidly bet it. And I kept betting it until I wiped myself out of my buy in. I’ll never forget that. And here’s the kicker. The Tie won just as I stopped playing.

ABBY: That’s Bad.

CINDY: Bad.

ABBY: An oops moment.

CINDY: Oops!
