Irritations

16 January 2025

CINDY: Last week I discussed what behaviors of some poker players that disturb me. While on that topic I thought it might be fun to discuss general disturbing behavior on the part of some other casino players.

ABBY: Maybe that would get some players not to do those behaviors.

CINDY: I guess it’s worth a try.

ABBY: Why not. Let’s fire away.

CINDY: When you are playing craps and a shooter has been having a great roll what are the things NOT to do? You can clap, yes, that is appropriate but you can’t shove your booze-smelling face into his face and talk into his nose and pound his back and scream “that a baby!” That will take him out of any rhythm that he seems to have or thinks he has.

ABBY: Craps is a wild game and cheering is encouraged but the shooter should basically be left alone. I don’t know if there actually is such a thing as a rhythm on the part of random rollers but those rollers tend to think they are in a rhythm or a kind of rhythm so why disturb them? Just let them shoot the way they want to shooter and enjoy making any money that you make.

CINDY: The rules of craps should be followed. Craps is like going to church; there are things you can say and do but some things are verboten.

ABBY: Do not dangle your hands over the edge of the table. That has no real effect on the randomness of the game but other players and the crew get pissed off if the same person time and again dangles his arms.

CINDY: Do not say the word “seven” because that brings bad luck. Does it really? No but other players will get pissed and the table camaraderie will sink. Do you really want to upset the shooter? I don’t think so.

ABBY: Smoking is still allowed at many tables – at least where we go – but it is just good manners in today’s world to smoke away from the table. Being an ex-smoker I have to tell you that smokers smell. Cigarette breath doesn’t bother the smoker but it bothers other players. Walk away from the table to light up. We no longer live in the world of the 1950s.

CINDY: Don’t make late bets. If there is any rhythm to the shooter, those late-betting players may disrupt that rhythm. Get your bets in on time. At roulette the dealers will say “no more bets” and craps dealers should do that too. Throw back their chips to them if they late bet. They will learn their lesson – I hope.

ABBY: We should pause for a moment. Most players, in fact the majority of the players, are just fine at the tables. But it only took one kid in a class to be a pain and that kid became a pain as an adult. You’ll find him everywhere.

CINDY: Especially on the roads.

ABBY: But enough about driving.

CINDY: If you are a blackjack player do not – DO NOT – tell other people how to play their hands or criticize their playing strategy. Players who try to poke themselves into other player’s strategies are royal pains. Castigating other players is truly bad manners.

ABBY: There are many more but for today these stand out to us. There is nothing wrong with being well mannered.
