Games We Don't Play (Much)

1 September 2024

CINDY: There are some games that we just do not play.

ABBY: Slots are not our favorites. It is just sitting in front of a machine programmed to take your money. Everything is random and there is no personality involved.

CINDY: I’d say we play the slots about 5 percent of the time. You might play a little more.

ABBY: Maybe.

CINDY: I also say the game has no personality but that means other games do have personalities which is true and not so true. You might have a dealer dealing cards but that dealer merely is the RNG as in the random number generator that exists in slot machines.

ABBY: Maybe the dealer acts as if he or she is the RNG – which is the program that selects what comes up on a slot machine. It is an unfeeling creature if you ask me.

CINDY: Some dealers are unfeeling. But that is beside the point. If you go to a blackjack game the table will have the dealer, at least, and generally some other players. There is human interaction.

ABBY: All for one and one for all?

CINDY: Not really but you get that feeling at times at craps. There does exist at times an all for one and one for all feeling. There can be high human energy when the dice are hot.

ABBY: And misery when the dice are cold.

CINDY: We only play the pass line and maybe a come bet but we do not go to the darkside. Why be hated by the other players?

ABBY: At craps, the shooter acts as the RNG. His throw determines the outcome of what is about to happen. The tone of the table reflects what has happened in the game. People’s emotions are strongly involved.

CINDY: At slots it is only one person involved. So, his or her highs and lows don’t really matter to anyone else.

ABBY: What about roulette?

CINDY: Closer to an individual game I’d say but you still have people at the table but there is not too much joint sharing among them. At least I haven’t found that.

ABBY: You do get more commonality in blackjack even. The dealer busts and everyone or a least a few players will be happy for that moment. There’s sharing going on.

CINDY: I find all table games have personality, some have a lot, some have a little but all have some. I think the energy is different. Slot machine energy is an individual matter, one on one; you and the machine. Table game energy is one and many versus the dealer or the dice or cards. You hear more voices raised in happiness and despair at a table game than on a slot machine.

ABBY: Unless the player hammers the machine for a big one. You don’t see that a lot of times do you?

CINDY: The title of this article is “Games We Don't Play (Much)"” but in reality the player picks whatever games suits him or her. So, there actually are no “bad” games.

ABBY: I agree. In short, we have the games we like to play as does everyone. Some games are just not that appealing, some are. You make your selection based on that factor.

CINDY: Absolutely.
