Expectations

CINDY: Everybody has certain expectations when they go to the casino. What are yours?

ABBY: True. I have expectations. I do not think the regular casino players such as us expect to always win but we do have a hope for that. But I consider expectations to be something different than just hoping to win. Even the worst casino players hope to win.

CINDY: Oh, I agree. I expect certain things on our visits. First we only go to casinos that I would list as “A” in terms of its games – or at least the games I want to play. If I want to play roulette I prefer the single-0 wheels or at least double-0, 00 wheels. And give me the “surrender” or “en prison” options on the even-money bets. Those are big draws to me.

ABBY: Normal blackjack, no more than six decks, with decent rules and three-to-two payouts on a blackjack. Craps with a minimum of two times odds or more as many casinos have today.

CINDY: I will play some other games and those slot machines that are closer to the old-time machines than the newbies.

ABBY: Those are getting tougher to find.

CINDY: Absolutely. We deal with new slots because we are older players and I guess we prefer the older slots.

ABBY: What about other aspects of the casinos that you expect to be something or other?

CINDY: Most of this is easy. I want really professional dealers who act as if they like their jobs – even if that is simply pretense. I do not expect sour dealers even if some players should be escorted out for being idiots. I know dealing can be a rotten job if the players are awful people and, sadly, some are. I want all the service personnel to be serviceable and friendly. I know this can be hard because their work is hard but it is what I expect. I do give good tips to the those who meet my expectations. Heck I was a waitress many years ago so I know the public can be hard to deal with especially when they are hungry.

ABBY: Let me add to your ideas. I want the restaurants to be excellent, even the buffet which did me in early in my casino trips. That was my toughest diet I ever went on! I want at least two gourmet restaurants at the casino-hotel I am staying at and most of the casinos we go to have two or more. I go to casino shows and some sports and if the casinos I like have them that is a strong lure for a trip there.

CINDY: What expectations do you have for your friends?

ABBY: Like you, dear sister, I prefer to keep my playing career and the rest of my life somewhat separate. This will sound strange I guess, but hardened gamblers are not my favorite people to engage with in conversation as a general rule. I enjoy writing and playing but I find I have the best discussions with you and some of the other writers. So, I stay out of casual gambling conversations.

CINDY: I basically feel the same way. I expect good casino conversations and most of the time most of the casino conversations leave a lot to be desired.

ABBY: If I have most of my expectations fulfilled than I can enjoy being at that casino hotel.

CINDY: Getting all of your expectations is a great expectation when you go to the world of the casinos.
