Doing It Right: Craps

26 August 2021

ABBY: The game of craps is a man’s world and has always been ever since it was introduced into the casino in the 20th century. Other than maybe a girlfriend or companion, men played the game alone. In fact many women were told by their significant others to go “play the slots” or, what they meant was, “get lost, we men must play the game!”

CINDY: Today, you might find a woman or two playing the game at a table in some casino but the female players are few and far between. Men love the game; women stay away from the game. And the game is not that hard to play, especially to play it correctly.

ABBY: And many men do not play the game of craps correctly. They yell and scream, groan and moan, but they often give themselves little chance to come out ahead in even a short version of the long run.

CINDY: And it is so much fun to play that I am surprised in this day of feminism that more women haven’t taken to the tables. Heck, this may be the last male bastion that women must overcome. Come on ladies, charge!

ABBY: And men, why don’t you charge too!

CINDY: When you’ve been in a casino for any time period, you will hear the noise of the craps tables. Players throw themselves into this game unlike any other game in the casino.

ABBY: If you take a look at the table’s layout it can confuse you. It does look like an alien language brought to Earth by creatures from a UFO. I think that layout causes would-be players to flee the game.

CINDY: Played right, the game is simple and offers the players an excellent chance to win. It is as close as any casino game and far closer than most.

ABBY: Here goes! You see the line around the table, on the outside part of the layout just under the players? It has the words Pass Line on it. The player who is about to shoot selects which two dice he wishes to throw or roll. This is called the “come-out” roll.

CINDY: He has a bet on the Pass Line and now he throws the dice. If the dice land on 7 or 11, the player wins and gets to have another Pass Line bet. If the dice land on 2, 3 or 12, the player loses and another shooter takes the dice.

ABBY: If the dice land on 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 or 10 that number becomes the “point” and the shooter must make that point to win or, if he rolls the 7, he loses and must pass the dice to the next shooter. The point number will have a disc placed on it.

CINDY: And that is the structure of the game. Now all those symbols and numbers on the layout, they are bets. But most are a waste-of-your-money type of bets. The Pass Line comes in with a house edge of just 1.41 percent. That is a very low house edge in the casino scheme of things.

ABBY: And now I will give you another simple way to play, even simpler than the Pass Line bet. Just take $12 (or any factor of $6) and tell the dealer to place it on the 6 or 8 – or, if you want, have $12 on the 6 and $12 on the 8. There are 10 ways to make those numbers combined and six ways to make the 7. Yes, the house still has an edge on those bets but that edge is 1.52 percent – another low edge.

CINDY: And that is a simple way to start playing the game in the correct manner!
