Cindy's 2024 Resolutions

21 January 2024

ABBY: It is time for us to bite the bullet and make our New Year's resolutions for 2024.

CINDY: You first.

ABBY: No, you first dear sister.

CINDY: You first because “A” comes before “C” in the alphabet.

ABBY: And the first shall be last.

CINDY: We could do this all day, so, okay, I will go first.

ABBY: Good girl. Give me some resolutions.

CINDY: I have my casino play down fairly much. I do plan on playing with a certain amount of money and should I lose that I quit. I have lost that amount maybe three times in all these years. I will continue doing that.

ABBY: I consider you a very disciplined player.

CINDY: You too. But I do have a few things I’d like to take care of for the coming year.

ABBY: Go over them.

CINDY: I’ve been playing too much on the slots, especially when I am losing on the table games. For some reason, I think of the slots as the “get me out of trouble” game to play when in fact they can be the “oh, boy, I am getting into trouble” game for me. You’ll see me at the end of poor sessions hustling over to the machines to deposit money and do my full prayers for rescue.

ABBY: Not a good way to end a session. Have any of these last-second attempts to turn the tide ever worked?

CINDY: A few, yes, but not enough to make doing this an intelligent way to end a session. I will be better off, going for a drink or just taking a walk or going to sleep. So, this is a smart resolution for me to make and keep.

ABBY: And?

CINDY: I engaged a few times in arguments – let me call them discussions – with the blackjack experts who always give players bad advice. I’d cite the correct basic strategy and why it was correct and one guy said I was a “stupid math freak” and I told him…well.

ABBY: What? Come on, what?

CINDY: I told him that I hoped he didn’t have any children because we have enough stupid people in the world. We weren’t shouting or anything but I got my point across and he shut up for a little while. Too little. By the way, the dealer smiled as this guy was always telling people what to do. The casino was really crowded and players had nowhere else to play blackjack so they had to tolerate this guy. From that statement I made, I just ignored him but I could hear him and I swore I would never open my big mouth like that again.

ABBY: What’s the point? The so-called almost always-wrong blackjack players who constantly tell other players how to play are just convinced they are right. You wonder where they learned their basic methods of losing?

CINDY: Their hatred of math is startling. I guess in school for many people math is just too far over the students’ heads.

ABBY: Any more resolutions?

CINDY: Not really. I am pretty good overall.

ABBY: That you are.
