Casino Friends

11 August 2022

CINDY: There are some friends that we have gone to casinos with but these aren’t the friends we are writing about in this article.

ABBY: No. We aren’t talking about friends from the neighborhood or former school chums that you get together with occasionally. Not at all.

CINDY: We’re talking about people you meet in the casino who want to develop a relationship with you, right there and then.

ABBY: These are people who might attach themselves to you when you are playing because you might have had a decent conversation with them or shared a table where things got hot – or got really bad and you could commiserate with each other.

CINDY: Now for that one trip, these individuals ask if you want to go to dinner together or get a drink together. Or a date!

ABBY: Or a date!

CINDY: The lover boys are a big, fat “no!” from me.

ABBY: Mine is a bigger and fatter “no” to the lotharios.

CINDY: I am leery to make friendships with casino players, especially the ones who immediately want to go to dinner or have drinks with you.

ABBY: Now, why is that? Are we snooty? Too good for everyone? Not at all; we have had bad experiences with what we call “casino friends,” often people who become demanding of your time.

CINDY: I don’t want someone who I don’t really know calling me and asking me when I am going to the casino next. I don’t want to be stuck with people on my trips. Friendships should develop naturally; they shouldn’t be forced. Casino friendships can be very forced events.

ABBY: I know many people are somewhat lonely and are looking for other people to hang out with. But I don’t want to be the surrogate buddy, if you know what I mean.

CINDY: We have had players who actually demand they go out with you right when you meet them. That’s not for me. I want a certain amount of privacy when I play – not being all alone

ABBY: Or me either. I can be in the casino with my sister or alone and being alone is no big deal. I am friendly and at time talkative but I do not want someone to, ah, ah…

CINDY: Glom onto me!

ABBY: Exactly. Good expression, “glom onto me.”

CINDY: I don’t know if this is something that is unique to us. Maybe other players like hooking up with people they have just met and then make plans to meet again in the casinos. It just doesn’t fit us.

ABBY: We go to a couple of casinos on a frequent basis and we know and are friendly with some of the regular players but they aren’t the “glomming” kind. We say hello and play at tables with them at times but that is about it. They aren’t looking for kinship.

CINDY: I do wonder what other players think of these “casino friendships.” Are other players leery of these, the way we are? That would be interesting to know.

ABBY: Definitely.
